The first meet of new year as usual takes place at headquarters, Flemington racecourse! What a great way to start the 2014 calendar year! As usual we get the time honored $150,000 (AUS) Listed Bagot Handicap over 2800m and the first Graded stakes race for 2014 in the $150,000 (AUS) Grade 3 Auries Star Handicap over 1200m down the straight. Lets do our best and try get the right start in 2014 with some winning choices!
Race 5 - Listed Bagot Handicap
Not really sure who leads these, but i'll put myself on the line and say THUBIAAN or CALLMEDAN. Any of 3,5,6,11 can be handy. ANGOLA led last time and failed. Cant really imagine them adopting those tactics here again. UNCHAIN MY HEART can tuck away around midfield inside and mind her own business. She'll be better after her sound effort at Werribee and this looks a good race for her. CRAFTY CRUISER and HURDY GURDY MAN are clearly the chances out of the Werribee Cup. No claims for apprentices here but OUTBACK JOE has a good chance. He was winding up nicely last time. I can also give with good arguement lesser chances to 4,9 and 10.

Race 6 - Grade 3 Standish Handicap
SEA LORD, DECIRCLES and FLAMBERGE should ensure this is a genuinely run 1200m straight race. SOLSAY and ESSAY RAIDER won't be far away. Make no mistake people, this is a very tough race! Down the page, the very best hopes might be SEA LORD (back to best last time, great value hope if in that form), ADDICTION TO ROCK (good win last time and that form is strong), BY THE WAY (sure to be running on), DECIRCLES (this is tougher than last time), ESSAY RAIDER (in very good form), SOLSAY (should've won on Boxing Day for mine), BELFAST BOY (good straight horse) and FLAMBERGE (excuses last time).
