Kentucky Derby pedigree profile: Salahudin

Salahudin was the first horse to strike on the 2026-27 Road to the Kentucky Derby, opening the series with a determined triumph in the Iroquois (G3) at Churchill Downs.

The Iroquois took place over a one-turn mile, but Salahudin’s pedigree suggests he’s a fantastic fit for the 1 1/4-mile, two-turn configuration of the Kentucky Derby (G1).

Salahudin is a son of Uncle Mo, the champion two-year-old male of 2010. While Uncle Mo enjoyed his strongest success in short routes, winning the 1 1/16-mile Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) and one-mile Champagne (G1), at stud he’s proven to be a consistent source of stamina.

Indeed, Uncle Mo’s first crop of foals produced Nyquist, the 2015 champion two-year-old male who went on to claim victory in the 2016 Kentucky Derby. Other long-winded and accomplished sons of Uncle Mo include Mo Donegal, conqueror of the 1 1/2-mile Belmont (G1); Arabian Knight, winner of the 1 1/4-mile Pacific Classic (G1); and Kingsbarns, winner of the 1 1/8-mile Stephen Foster (G1) and 1 3/16-mile Louisiana Derby (G2).

Uncle Mo has also sired quality sprinters and milers, with Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) winner Golden Pal a prime example. But overall, Uncle Mo’s runners have compiled a stamina-oriented average winning distance of 7.5 furlongs.

The bottom half of Salahudin’s pedigree reiterates his potential for developing into a serious Kentucky Derby contender.

Salahudin’s dam is Weekend Strike, a capable turf runner who finished second in the one-mile Sweetest Chant S. and first in a 1 1/16-mile allowance. The fact that she performed well on grass is understandable since Weekend Strike’s dam, Weekend Storm, is best known for foaling Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) winner Court Vision.

Weekend Strike passed on her turf affinity to her daughter Sizzling, born in 2015. Sizzling, by legendary grass sire Galileo, won the 1 1/2-mile Give Thanks (G3) and 1 3/4-mile Vinnie Roe S. on turf, showing effective staying power.

So how did Weekend Strike produce a dirt runner like Salahudin? Uncle Mo surely played a part, but there are also notable dirt influences throughout Weekend Strike’s pedigree.

First and foremost, there’s Smart Strike, the sire of Weekend Strike. Winner of the 1 1/16-mile Philip H. Iselin (G1) on dirt, Smart Strike is the sire of elite dirt racers like two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, two-time champion Lookin At Lucky, Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) winner Battle of Midway, and champion two-year-old filly My Miss Aurelia. Plus, daughters of Smart Strike have foaled Kentucky Derby winners Mine That Bird and Rich Strike, as well as 1 3/16-mile Preakness (G1) hero Seize the Grey.

We’ve already mentioned that Weekend Strike’s dam is Weekend Storm. Weekend Storm, in turn, is a daughter of Weekend Surprise, by Triple Crown winner Secretariat.

Weekend Surprise was a classy dirt racer who won the Schuylerville (G3) and Golden Rod (G3) in addition to placing in several Grade 1 stakes. But as a broodmare, she achieved legendary status as the dam of A.P. Indy and Summer Squall.

A.P. Indy, by Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew, won the 1 1/2-mile Belmont and 1 1/4-mile Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) before developing into an incredibly productive and reliable source of stamina at stud. Some of his best runners include 2003 Horse of the Year Mineshaft, Belmont winner Rags to Riches, and Preakness hero Bernardini, all Grade 1 winners racing 1 1/4 miles or farther.

As for Summer Squall—a son of Storm Bird and a full brother to Weekend Storm—he won the Preakness and finished second in the Kentucky Derby, emerging as one of the best of his generation racing classic distances on dirt.

So let’s briefly recap: Salahudin is a son of Uncle Mo, the sire of Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist. His dam sire is Smart Strike, whose daughters have previously foaled Kentucky Derby winners Mine That Bird and Rich Strike. And Salahudin’s female family includes the dam of classic winners A.P. Indy and Summer Squall.

In short, Salahudin is bred top and bottom to shine in the Triple Crown races, including the Kentucky Derby.
