Australia Racing Preview: Golden Slipper Preview

Saturday at Rosehill Gardens will see another edition of the richest race for 2YR olds in the world.
The Golden Slipper has long been the most sought after prize in the Australian 2YR old season, not so much for the value it may bring at Stud for a young Colt winning, as there are better page filling races, but for the huge $3.5 Million dollar purse that these virtual babies will be racing for.
The boom youngster this year is the Darley filly Earthquake. She has swept all before her in remaining undefeated including the Grade 1 Blue Diamond Stakes. She will be extremely hard to beat in the slipper but as we all know, nothing is guaranteed in racing!
Among some of the main challengers will be a Sebring filly called Believe Yourself.
She is unbeaten in two starts, and according to trainer Gerald Ryan well and truly deserves her spot in the world’s richest two-year-old race.
“She’s an amazing filly really,” Ryan told TVN this week.
“She’s not a great track-worker and doesn’t really show you much at home, but she’s a racehorse when you get to the track,” Ryan said.
“She doesn’t need much work, very clean winded and she totally deserves her place in the field,” he added.
Mick Price will take into battle two runners, with Jabali and Cornrow representing the smart stable. Both ran in the Blue Diamond and finished 2nd and 3rd respectively behind the undefeated Earthquake. They will be aiming to swing that around this time out but will definitely have their work cut out for them
The other real dangers are the Hawkes trained Mossfun, who will present ago and must be considered, although many will tell you that it was clear to the eye last start that she just did not have the game to get past Earthquake last start when she had every chance. And then there is the intriguing runner Bring Me The Maid. The Peter Moody trained runner was pretty impressive last week on the wet track and she will more than likely see another this weekend as she backs up in just a week for a crack at the huge prize money on offer!
All in all it will be a fantastic race and we may just see a true champion of the turf in Earthquake show us just how good she really is, although not many of us doubt that right now. But as we know, and as history has shown, the Golden Slipper does not mind throwing up an upset and this year may be no different.
On another note, an amazing statistic about this year’s race that you should know…every horse in the race was sired in the prestigious Hunter Valley reason of Australia. That really is quite an amazing statistic.
