Weekday picks and plays for Thoroughbred racing.
Friday, July 3
Belmont Park, Race 6: Allowance/optional claiming (1 1/16 miles, 3:59 p.m. ET)
The graded stakes-placed #7 Spice Is Nice (4-5 on the morning line) and the quick maiden winner #5 Say Moi (9-5) figure to start at short prices in this allowance test for 3-year-old fillies, but #4 Vigilantes Way (8-1) can also get involved at a price.
A stoutly bred daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, out of the Unbridled mare Salute, this Phipps Stable homebred is a half-sibling to three stakes winners, including Belmont Derby (G1) victor Mr. Speaker.
Vigilantes Way flashed potential when she parlayed pace-tracking tactics to victory in a 7-furlong maiden sprint at Tampa Bay Downs, but nothing went right when she stepped up in class and distance for the 1 1/16-mile Hollywood Wildcat S. at Gulfstream Park. After poor break, Vigilantes Way was a bit rank and weakened over a wet track to finish fifth.
There isn’t much speed in Friday’s field, so with a clean break, Vigilantes Way can secure a forward position and rebound in a big way.
At 8-1, she is worth betting to win and playing under Say Moi and Spice Is Nice in the exacta.
$10 to win on #4 Vigilantes Way
$5 exacta: 5,7 with 4 ($10)
Total: $20
Good luck!
