Bombs Away in Round 3
To say that the longshots took over round 3 of the 2016 $50,000 Orange Park Derby would be an understatement. All three of the undefeated greyhounds went down and none of them even made the quiniela in their respective races. So, the points are spread out all over the place, but there was one shining light on a dark and dreary evening for the big dogs, Herstal won again and has the hottest hand going heading into the semi-finals.
Breaking close for her, 3rd, in the 15th race on the card, Herstal, the 770-track record holder from Clear Lake Racing, was chasing the spirited early pace set by Lk’s Centuria down the frontside the first time around. Several lengths behind the leader, she was not out of contention at all as she can run even further with no issues. Making up ground down the backside she positioned herself up into second as they turned for home. This is when she made her move. Gaining with every single stride she took up the stretch, she creeped closer and closer to the tiring leader. Digging in deep, she gave her all with one final push and that was enough to steal away a win from the jaws of defeat. A nose best late, Herstal won back to back races. Giving a winning trip, but settling for place, was Lk’s Centuria at the wire. Third was the closing double winner Kk Whitezin, and completing the superfecta was the steady retreating runner Skiddy Flicker.
Clear Lake Racing also won another round of the stakes, but RT Banana Foster was totally not considered to win this event. Kiss This had two wins in a row and was the favorite to take home her third straight win, but sitting in the box for a break is bad news. Boc’s Luigi bombed to the lead and set the pace to the far turn, but the closers would come a calling late and the early leader would finish out of the money. Rt Banana Foster chased the pace around the racetrack, took over entering the stretch, and held off the rest to score a big-time victory in round number 3. Pat C Fracking made up ground throughout and finished a game second. Third was the late closing Lee Sally and race time favorite Kiss This gave an even effort to round out the superfecta.
Another big upset winner came in the 12th race as the J & J Calabro kennel scored with Rtr Marie Laveau. Breaking on top, she took over instant command of this race. Stretch out to a big lead early on, 4.5 lengths, she cruised all the way around the racetrack untouched and crossed the finish line 4 lengths ahead of the rest in a speedy 37.56 second clocking. Flying up late, but it was just too late, was Barts Risingstar. After encountering early trouble, he rallied all the way around the racetrack and made a huge final run to secure a spot in the quiniela. Third was the solid chasing C Ville Hope. Try as she might, she just couldn’t gain on the leader, but she gave her all before being run down in the final few strides, and had to settle for show. Fourth was Pat C Dashboard, who closed well after trouble and took home the final spot in the superfecta at the wire.
The other winner was Gs Hal from the Willis kennel in the 10th race. Here no greyhound was favored more than Seldom Told, but his streak too would come to an end in this effort. Hal broke closer and rushed hard to the early lead over the chasing rivals as they crossed the finish line the first time around. Seldom Told collided at the break, but kept driving inside and was just off the leader by 2 lengths early on. The duo continued in the lead all the way to the far turn, where Hals lead had shrunk to just a length heading home. Several though that it was another win from Told, but the collision early must have taking some of the run out of him late. Hal dug in deep as Told swung wide as the moved down the stretch. Hal cruised all the way to the wire for the slim win at the wire. Other closers came a calling and Told was outclosed in the deep stretch, and lost the photo and finished 4th. Jack’s Jet Speed won the photo for place as Kk Scotchwhiskey nipped the chaser for show.
The semi-finals of the 2016 $50,000 Orange Park Derby will take place on Saturday evening November 5th at bestbet Jacksonville. The field will be trimmed down again as the top 24 greyhounds compete for a chance at securing a spot in the finals on next Saturday evening November 12th.
