Both surfaces at Santa Anita play fairly, Hollendorfer sends out a sharp pair of winners in Cadet Roni & Stays in Vegas

SANTA ANITA NOTEBOOK

There was no graded racing this past weekend at Santa Anita.

Track Stats

From a total of 44 races held at the Arcadia, California racetrack during the past week, favorites won at a 32 percent clip and the top two betting choices combined for 55 percent of the wins. From 29 frays contested on the dirt oval, five animals won in wire-to-wire fashion (17 percent), while three of the 15 grassy tilts were taken all the way on the front end (20 percent).

Both ovals played fairly to all sorts as we saw winners come from everywhere this past week. Of the five horses who led at every call on the dirt surface. Four came in sprint runs.

We did see speed and early ones have success on the lawn, but we also give closers every chance given how the strip is playing to this point.

HORSES TO WATCH

Thursday (10/8)

6TH – Mark Glatt’s CADET RONI (Colonel John) made the lead from the rail at the break and increased her edge at every call en route to a smart tally in the starter allowance. The three-year-old filly looked strong late, running a fast time for the level, and could be tough on a class rise next time out.

Friday (10/9)

2ND – NEVER ENDS (Successful Appeal) looked good on paper but better on the track with a dominating allowance tally for conditioner Jerry Hollendorfer. The sophomore miss has improved since stretching out and could be stakes bound soon in this fine form cycle.

4TH – OSSETRA (Into Mischief) dueled for the lead, gained a short edge at the top of the lane and finished up nicely in a smart debut tally for conditioner Bob Baffert. The two-year-old colt was not claimed out of this and likely won’t be offered for a tag in his next outing.

Saturday (10/10)

2ND – ILLUMINANT (Quality Road) showed promise on the turf on two occasions while close and really put it all together today, recording a commanding 6 ¾-length romp under Rafael Bejarano. The Mike McCarthy trainee came home pretty well under mild urging and should be a major player with winners next time on a course she seems to thrive upon.

4TH – MOYO HONEY (Mizzen Mast) proved the move back to one turn and dirt racing was the right move with a fine allowance win over a short-priced favorite for trainer Paddy Gallagher. The sophomore miss traveled wide throughout and still came home best in a powerful tally.

7TH – STAYS IN VEGAS (City Zip) picked up a third stakes win from four lifetime outings with a good-looking score in her turf debut. The Hollendorfer pupil proved good as a sprinter on the main oval but really impressed in her turf and two-turn bow – she could be a real nice prospect going forward.

8TH – LET’S MEET IN RIO (Flatter) finished only fifth in this debut outing, though the first timer overcame a bad break and ran on pretty well in a race where the early types didn’t back up much. Tab this one to be a player second time out, with value perhaps.

Sunday (10/11)

3RD – LINDEZA (Harlan’s Holiday) took aim in the lane, gamely wearing down a clear one inside the final furlong, and recorded a nice debut win for trainer John Sadler. The expensive two-year-old buy looked full of run in the latter stages of this affair and we have confidence that she will stretch out with more seasoning.

4TH – RIRI (Speightstown) was well placed to the run down the hill and showed off a nice gear late in posting a facile maiden tally for conditioner Phil d’Amato. The juvenile filly finished fast for the level and could surely evolve into a stakes type with further improvement.

A Look Ahead

The $100,000 Autumn Miss S. (G3) on Saturday is the lone graded race this week at Santa Anita.
