The first day of the 2026 Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge (BCBC) ended with a close battle for the first three spots on the leaderboard.
Matthew McJunkin topped the standings with $44,866.00, narrowly besting Vic Stauffer, who accumulated $44,442.10. Scott McKeever checked in third with $41,561.78.
A gap separated the top three from the next nine contestants, who compiled scores between $28,220.10 and $20,070.00. All told, the BCBC features 693 entries.
Players started with a $7,500 bankroll and were required to wager a minimum of $600 per race in at least three of the five Breeders’ Cup races on Friday at Keeneland. Buy-in cost $10,000, with the option to earn entries through various qualifying tournaments, including tournaments on TwinSpires.com.
McJunkin led coming into the final race of Day 1, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1). He added $1,516.00 to his score by cashing a $100 exacta box (total cost $600) using the victorious Haffner alongside Folsom Blues and Avec Toi, who finished second and third.
McJunkin’s winning exacta allowed him to maintain a slim lead over Stauffer, who made a huge move up the standings. When Haffner rallied to victory in the Juvenile Turf, Stauffer cashed a daily double that paid $5,905.00, two exactas that returned $1,516.00 and $13,371.10, and a $5,000 win bet that yielded $23,650.00. He advanced 115 positions into second place.
McKeever likewise rocketed up the leaderboard in the final race, climbing 274 places after cashing a variety of bets, including a trifecta worth $22,447.50 and an exacta that paid $15,160.00.
The BCBC concludes on Saturday, when players must wager $600 or more in at least seven of the nine Breeders’ Cup races. Bettors are required to wager all of their initial $7,500 bankroll by the end of the tournament.
The top 25 finishers in the BCBC are competing for cash prizes totaling more than $1.7 million. The top 15 finishers will earn entries into the 2027 National Horseplayers Championship (NHC) tournament.
Also, the seven highest finishers from Day 1 who played on-site at Keeneland via self-betting machines earned entries into major 2027 handicapping tournaments. Two players secured berths in the $5,000 Kentucky Derby Betting Challenge (KDBC) taking place on May 1, 2027.
The 2027 KDBC features a guaranteed prize pool of $400,000, including cash and entries into the 2027 BCBC, 2028 KDBC, and 2028 NHC. Buy-in costs are $5,000, or players can seek to earn an entry through qualifying tournaments.
