Breeders’ Cup Roundup: Sovereignty, Magnitude meet again

Bow Echo, Diamond Necklace remain unbeaten

A pair of accomplished three-year-olds remained unbeaten while snagging Group 1 wins against older horses at Goodwood in England last week, in the process earning “Win and You’re In” berths to the Breeders’ Cup.

Bow Echo was the first to strike. The 2000 Guineas (G1) and St. James’s Palace (G1) winner faced older rivals in the one-mile Sussex (G1) and fought his way out of traffic in the homestretch to rally and defeat 2025 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) winner Gstaad by half a length.

Now 6-for-6, Bow Echo secured an entry into the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1), and trainer George Boughey indicated the Breeders’ Cup is a year-end goal for the bay colt.

Diamond Necklace, a sophomore filly, likewise boosted her career tally to 6-for-6 when conquering her elders in the 1 1/4-mile Nassau (G1). Coming off wins in the Prix Marcel Boussac (G1), Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (G1), and Prix de Diane (G1), Diamond Necklace rated in the middle of a five-horse field before taking over with authority to triumph by 2 3/4 lengths.

The victory qualified Diamond Necklace to compete in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1).

Pershaada earns Juvenile Turf Sprint berth

Goodwood produced a third Breeders’ Cup qualifier when the two-year-old filly Pershaada defeated males to win the five-furlong Molecomb (G3), a steppingstone to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G1).

Pershaada unleashed a big late charge to triumph by two lengths over 10 rivals.

Plans call for Pershaada to consider a start against older rivals in the Aug. 31 Nunthorpe (G1), dashing five furlongs at York, which is a proven path to the Breeders’ Cup. In 2023, Big Evs won the Molecomb and finished 14th in the Nunthorpe before bouncing back to win the Flying Childers (G2) and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.

Eunomia upsets the Clement L. Hirsch

The 1 1/16-mile Clement L. Hirsch (G1) at Del Mar ended in an upset as 12-1 shot Eunomia battled to victory by half a length, stamping her ticket to the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1).

Eunomia was never more than half a length behind pace fractions of :23.20, :46.81, and 1:10.99. She took over the lead in the homestretch and held off a big late charge from Om N Joy to reach the finish line in 1:44.10.

Defending Clement L. Hirsch winner Seismic Beauty started as the 3-2 favorite, but faded after dueling for the lead and finished eighth.

Magnitude, Sovereignty meet again in Whitney

A stellar field of older horses will vie for a Win and You’re In berth to the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) in Saturday’s Whitney (G1) over 1 1/8 miles at Saratoga.

The field is led by Dubai World Cup (G1) winner Magnitude and 2025 Horse of the Year Sovereignty. Sovereignty is more accomplished overall thanks to wins in the 2025 Kentucky Derby (G1), Belmont (G1), and Travers (G1), but he recently finished third behind Magnitude in the Stephen Foster (G1), so the Whitney is shaping up as a high-profile rematch between two of the best horses in training.

Baeza, winner of the 2025 Pennsylvania Derby (G1) and runner-up in the Stephen Foster (G1), is also back for the Whitney. The depth of the field is further bolstered by 2023 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner White Abarrio, 2025 champion three-year-old filly Nitrogen, 2025 Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) conqueror Antiquarian, runway Hollywood Gold Cup (G2) winner Forged Steel, and 2025 Louisiana Derby (G2) victor Tiztastic.

Deterministic seeks Mile berth in Fourstardave

Some of North America’s most accomplished turf horses will face off in Saturday’s Fourstardave (G1) at Saratoga, a one-mile grass contest awarding a berth to the Breeders’ Cup Mile.

The seven-horse lineup includes Deterministic, Rhetorical, and Zulu Kingdom, all victorious multiple times at the Grade 1 level; Classic Q, a filly last seen winning the Just a Game (G1); Lagynos, who has won five straight stakes (four of them graded) at Fair Grounds and Churchill Downs; Capitol Hill, beaten a nose in the Poker (G3); and Mi Bago, who finished in a dead-heat for victory with Zulu Kingdom in the Kelso (G3).
