Breeders’ Cup Roundup: Sovereignty rebounds in Whitney

Sovereignty conquers deep Whitney field

Sovereignty, the 2025 Horse of the Year and Kentucky Derby (G1) winner, bounced back to his best to defeat a strong field in the 1 1/8-mile Whitney (G1) at Saratoga.

After opening his 2026 campaign with a second in the Oaklawn H. (G2) and a third in the Stephen Foster (G1), Sovereignty entered the Whitney with a major question to answer: could he recapture his stellar three-year-old form?

The answer was a resounding yes. After rating as many as 8 1/2 lengths behind fast fractions of :23.43, :46.27, and 1:09.65 set by 2025 champion three-year-old filly Nitrogen, Sovereignty unleashed a powerful rally down the homestretch, pulling away to dominate by 4 3/4 lengths in the fast time of 1:47.91.

In the process, Sovereignty secured a “Win and You’re In” berth to the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1). Sovereignty was the expected favorite for the 2025 Breeders’ Cup Classic after winning the Kentucky Derby, Belmont (G1), Jim Dandy (G2), and Travers (G1) in succession, but a fever forced him to scratch.

According to the New York Racing Association, next up on Sovereignty’s agenda is the Sept. 18 Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) racing 1 1/4 miles at Belmont Park.

Behind Sovereignty, Nitrogen fought gallantly to finish second by a neck, a remarkable performance given the intensity of the pace she set. The New York Racing Association reports Nitrogen will target the Oct. 4 Spinster (G1) at Keeneland as a prep for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1). She finished second in both races last year.

Magnitude started as the Whitney betting favorite thanks to wins in the Dubai World Cup (G1) and Stephen Foster (G1), but after stumbling at the start, he was beaten to the early lead and eventually tired to finish sixth. Blood-Horse reports Magnitude is unlikely to race again before the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

White Abarrio, the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner, tired to finish last of seven in the Whitney. This marked his second straight subpar performance following a fourth-place finish in the Stephen Foster (G1). On Monday, it was announced White Abarrio is retiring to stud.

Deterministic strikes again in Fourstardave

Deterministic picked up his sixth straight graded stakes win, and his fourth career Grade 1 win, when nabbing Saratoga’s one-mile Fourstardave (G1) for the second year in a row.

In the midst of a rainstorm, Deterministic secured a forward position, tracking the pace in second place as Mi Bago set splits of :24.20, :48.54, and 1:12.19. Then Deterministic unleashed a sharp burst of acceleration, running his final quarter-mile in under :23 seconds to take command and defeat Mi Bago by 1 1/2 lengths in 1:35.07.

Multiple Grade 1 winners Zulu Kingdom and Rhetorical rounded out the top four.

The Fourstardave awarded Deterministic an entry into the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1). Although he’s won at the Grade 1 level racing as far as 1 3/16 miles, Deterministic is expected to remain at one mile for the time being, with the New York Racing Association reporting the Sept. 12 Woodbine Mile (G1) is his probable next target.

Survie wheels back on short rest for Christophe Clement

The lone Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series qualifier taking place this week is Saturday’s Christophe Clement (G1) at Saratoga, a 1 1/2-mile steppingstone to the Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1).

Survie, a five-year-old mare formerly based in Europe, made her North American debut a victorious one in the Aug. 2 Glens Fall (G2) at Saratoga. Facing fillies and mares over 1 1/2 miles, Survie stormed from behind a slow pace to score by 1 3/4 lengths and will run back just 13 days later in the Christophe Clement.

Other entrants include Ole Crazy Bone, Fort George, and Minaret Station, who were separated by half a length when finishing 1-2-3 in Saratoga’s Bowling Green (G2) last month; Program Trading, a multiple Grade 1 winner who recently took the United Nations (G2); Tawny Port, conqueror of the two-mile Belmont Gold Cup (G2); and Ancient Egypt, a European sophomore exiting a runner-up finish in France’s Grand Prix de Paris (G1).
