British Spot Plays: Newbury for April 18, 2026

With the conclusion this week of the Craven meeting at Newmarket, the English flat focus turns to Newbury and its two Guineas trials on Saturday. Those two races kick off a card that also includes the John Porter (G3), a 1 1/2-mile feature for older horses.
My season got off to a good start at Newmarket on Wednesday, when Morshdi ($29.60) prevailed in the Feilden S. That $25 win wager boosted the bankroll to $845 from its original starting point of $500. However, two subsequent wagers netted zero, so the bankroll now stands at $763 going into the Newbury action.
Throughout the season, I will be betting 5% of the outstanding balance to win on my selections. The first play on this card will be for $38.
Race 1: Fred Darling (G3), 8:25 a.m. ET.
Touleen might prove a standout, but only if she runs more like she did in her first two starts, rather than her disappointing stakes debut in the Rockfel (G2). But I'm not sold on her at another expected short price.
#11 Stimulative Trip (15-1) is an intriguing stakes newcomer. She debuted over this course and distance last June in a lucrative novice and looked far more mature than her years and what her 20-1 odds might have suggested.
Watching the replay, Stimulative Trip was stuck in traffic behind a wall of horses much of the way. Eased toward the nearside rail in order to take her crack, she then took a good brush from a rival before quickening nicely to the wire while under hand encouragement.
Although the form of that race hasn't proved so hot, she's deserving of a go in conditions we know she likes. Minor issues prevented her from starting again last term but reportedly nothing serious.

Race 2: Greenham (G3), 9 a.m. ET
Most eyes will be on top-level winner Zavateri and the redemption-seeking Albert Einstein. The latter goes for Coolmore, who also have #7 Title Role (5-1). That colt will be a better price.
Unlike the top pair, Title Role has some experience over the course. He just missed in his debut here to Humidity, who went on to win the Chesham S. at Royal Ascot and run good seconds in the Solario (G3) and Royal Lodge (G2).
After a maiden win on the all-weather at Kempton, Title Role wintered in Dubai, where he won two of three. The latter was in a UAE 2000 Guineas trial, in which he won by a length. Finishing third was Talk of New York, a smart winner at Newmarket earlier this week.
Although he lacks the back class of either Zavateri or Albert Einstein, Title Role is still an unfinished article. He'll offer value in an interesting renewal of this seven-furlong test.
