Churchill Downs: The horse you need to bet in the $99,167 Single 6 sequence

November 12th, 2020

The Single 6 jackpot continues to grow at Churchill Downs, where the carryover pool has reached $99,167 for Thursday’s card.

If the jackpot survives one more day, the carryover should exceed six figures for Friday. But why not try to take down the whole pool on Thursday?

Wednesday recap

Straightforward results were the name of the game Wednesday at Churchill Downs. Although only one favorite reached the winner’s circle during the Single 6 sequence, four of the six winners started at 4-1 or less, with an 8-1 shot ranking as the biggest surprise of the sequence.

A 20-cent ticket returned $4,584.44.

Thursday insights

The Thursday sequences kicks off with Race 5, a $50,000 maiden claiming race for 2-year-olds.

Although eight horses have been entered in the 6 1/2-furlong dash, handicapping the race might be as simple as singling #1 Lend It Tewmey (3-1) and moving on.

Lend It Tewmey hasn’t missed the trifecta in three starts on dirt. He came closest to victory when second by a nose in a $25,000 maiden claiming sprint at Ellis Park. Lend It Tewmey subsequently shipped to Indiana Grand and finished third in a pair of maiden special weight races. He equaled the Brisnet Speed rating par for Thursday’s race (79) when he finished third in a 1 1/16-mile race Oct. 12.

The drop down in class and distance should suit Lend It Tewmey. As a pure frontrunner, he figures to enjoy a perfect ground-saving trip after a break from the rail.

Fellow class dropper #7 Sidetown (5-2) might warrant inclusion on deeper tickets, considering trainer Randy Morse strikes at a 22% rate when he transitions runners from maiden special weight to maiden claiming company. But with a career-best 65 Brisnet Speed rating, Sidetown isn’t as fast on paper as Lend It Tewmey.

The possibility of catching a single in the Single 6 kickoff leg is appealing, because Race 7 looks wide open. Although just six horses have been entered in the 1-mile optional-claiming allowance for fillies and mares, you can make a case for at least four or five of them, so the “ALL” button might be necessary to guarantee survival.

Good luck!
