Closing types have some success but speed remains dangerous on Aqueduct inner track

December 30th, 2015

AQUEDUCT NOTEBOOK

There was no graded action this past week at Aqueduct.

Track Stats

A total of 18 races were held over the inner strip at the Long Island, New York venue, with favorites winning at a 39 percent rate and the top two betting choices combining for 50 percent of the wins during the week. Five races were won in wire-to-wire fashion (28 percent).

Closing types did best on Saturday, but that changed on Sunday when four runners led throughout from nine races. Of the four, a trio came in route events. Speed from any post is still always dangerous, especially in two-turn races.

HORSES TO WATCH

Saturday (12/26)

3RD – EDEN RIDGE (Lookin at Lucky) swept to the lead nearing midstretch and left his foes in his wake with a powerful score for conditioner Danny Gargan. The Churchill shipper surely put in his best race to date and the juvenile colt likely won’t be in for a tag next time.

4TH – SASSICAIA (Bernardini) showed no rust in his first start since the Saratoga, offering a big closing run to a record a fine allowance victory for Rudy Rodriguez. The four-year-old colt has ability and may continue build off this one after coming home in a swift :22 4/5.

8TH – GREEN GRATTO (Here’s Zealous) continued his fine form run with a dominant stakes score, leading at every call as he made short work of a decent field. The Grade 3-winning five-year-old will be headed back to graded company.

Sunday (12/27)

5TH – B THREE (Court Vision) prompted the pace from the outset and never quit in a strong third-place finish versus stakes foes. The two-year-old filly might be a useful one heading into her sophomore campaign for trainer Linda Rice.

8TH – DR. SHANE (Freud) ran another big second behind a super sharp runner and may finally catch that rival with a bit of luck going forward. The two-year-old colt is very consistent and always a factor on this circuit.

A Look Ahead

Saturday features the $200,000 Jerome S. (G3), a Kentucky Derby qualifier for newly-turned sophomores.
