The Dubai World Cup is Underway!

So let's take a look at the races...

Meydan 4 | 10:25 am ET G2 UAE Derby for 3yo going 1-3/16 mi. (A)

The morning favorite is the West Virginia-bred / Ballydoyle-trained Giovanni Boldini who is unraced since a strong runner-up finish in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile turf; perhaps he'll need a race off the layoff, but O'Brien rarely sends out a short horse (though I hate the price, I think he wins and we see him in Kentucky in 5 weeks). Coolmore also has Sir John Hawkins, a beautifully-bred Henrythenavigator colt who is also in off the layoff, but - crucially - is stretching out to a route distance for the first time. Toast of New York is intriguing at the 20-1 M/L price: the bay Triple Crown nominee is in off back-to-back daylight victories and gets Jamie Spencer back aboard. Others to consider include Cooptado who hasn't run a bad race in his native Argentina; Long John who won his 2014 debut in the UAE Two Thousand Guineas; and Asmar whose four career starts have come at Meydan and who romped by six lengths in his last out.

Meydan 7 | 12:30 pm ET G1 Dubai Duty Free for 4&up going 1-1/8 mi. (T)

If you can't get excited by the mere idea of The Fugue and Dank meeting in a starting gate - frankly - I can't help you. The former is one of the gamest lil mares around and cuts back to a non-classic/marathon distance for the first time since her second lifetime start. Dank, meanwhile, has been successfully beating up on a weak bunch of American turf mares and is 2-for-2 at a 1-1/8 mi. From the male side, Vercingetorix is the one to beat: it doesn't get better than undefeated for Mike de Kock. Among the Japanese contingent is Just a Way, famous as much for beating Gentildonna two races back as he is for his consistency (5-2-3-0 in the last year). Trade Storm might be interesting at a price: he may be second tier, but he always runs his race.

Meydan 8 | 1:17 pm ET G1 Dubai Sheema Classic for 4&up going 1-1/2 mi. (T)

Given the G1 Breeders' Cup Turf triumph last fall, a lot of the attention will be on Magician: the 4yo colt can be quite streaky and it'll be interesting to see what he does off the layoff. The Japanese contingent is headlined by the awesome Gentildonna: the bay mare really hasn't set a hoof wrong in her 14 race career and got a much-needed prep this year when 6th - but only by 3-1/4 lengths - and this time gets back to her favorite distance. Denim and Ruby, a beautiful Deep Impact filly who was second by a nose to the great Gentildonna when last seen in November also deserves a look. The French hope is the ultra consistent Cirrus des Aigles, a talented 8yo who won the 2012 Shemma Classic. At a price, Mount Athos is one of the few in this field with a start this year: he was a near-miss 3rd in a prep earlier this month and gets the services of Kieran Fallon for Marco Botti.

Obviously, Ron the Greek is the great (former American) hope to win and he's certainly versatile enough and in off a big prep in Saudi Arabia to be considered a likely favorite; plus getting Lezcano back up can't hurt. But - thanks to racing luck, the fact he hasn't been on a synthetic surface in three years, and an outside post position - he may be vulnerable. Ruler of the World has never run on a synthetic and has the talent to be a superstar when he's right. There are a few others who are very talented from an exotics standpoint and - with a little more luck - could be multiple G1 winners: Red Cadeaux is always right there at the wire, Belshazzar ran a good race off the layoff in his first start of 2014, Military Attack seldom runs a bad race; and Side Glance may not be beating much, but he's consistent too. Of the more winning-prone runners, Prince Bishop has run well every time Kieran Fallon is aboard and won both Al Maktoum Challenge preps, Sanshaawes loves to run at Meydan, and African Story always does his best running here.
