Friday the 13th Could Be Lucky for Some
While many superstitious horse players might consider Friday the 13th to be unlucky, standardbred fans who might view the occasion differently will want to pay close attention to one of the latter races on the Yonkers Raceway card that evening.
Granted, typically the Friday cards at Yonkers Raceway feature the pacing fillies and mares and the New York half-mile oval will offer a F-M Open Handicap on Friday, but the most intriguing event on the card occurs two races later.
Friday's eighth race at Yonkers is a non-winners of $20,000 last five starts for older Pacers and this overnight event features a solid group of genuine veteran campaigners. The eight pacers have combined to win 274 races and earn $5.6 million from 1,251 starts and two of them have recorded 50 wins apiece.

In fact, both Sapphire City and Shortstacked are accustomed to competing in upper tier events on the Saturday evening cards at Yonkers and both notched the 50th wins of their careers last season over the New York half-mile oval.
Sapphire City will make his 2017 debut from post three for trainer Paul Blumenfeld and brings a stellar 50-43-18 slate and $1.26 million bankroll from 229 career outings. Shortstacked owns a similar 50-33-29 slate and $800,000 bankroll from 288 career outings and makes his seasonal debut from post eight.
At some point this year both Machs Beach Boy and Mojo Terror will make their 200th career starts, respectively, while Validus Deo should hit 150 lifetime outings at some point this season. That trio has made fewer combined starts than Sapphire City and Shortstacked, so we shall see which one of these veteran campaigners is poised to kick off the New Year in style on Friday the 13th at Yonkers.
