Greyhound Preview - SOUTHLAND 8/16/14
By MoneyMaker Mike
Race 4 - Grade A - 583 yards - The key here is the (2) Branding Iron, a hard running greyhound who gives 110% each time out and who has dropped in class. He has a mid-track running style and a good rush to the turn but will need to avoid any early trouble to get in position to challenge for the win. The (8) SE's High Onlife comes here from the Derby Lane track where she was running grade A and had 12 wins in 39 races. This will be her first official start at Southland but she did run second from the eight box in her only schooling race here. To finish the play I'll use both the (7) Flying Thor and the (1) Mega Werewolf who are also recent transfers from the St. Pete track.
Pick 2-8-7-1
Race 7 - Grade AA - 583 yards - I'm going with the (8) Flying Riot in this one as he is coming off two wins and a second place finish in his last three races in this grade. He will be strongly challenged by the (7) Arkans Jack who is going after his fourth straight win. He has a mid to wide running style and tons of early speed so these two should go paw to paw right out of the box. Should there be any early trouble among the frontrunners, the (3) RCK Black Beauty could be the one that benefits the most as she has good speed early and likes the inside. The (1) Heyl will be included as I like his strong late move and he's a definite threat for tri and superfecta plays.
Pick 8-7-3-1
Race 12 - Grade D - 583 yards - The pick here is the (2) Oshkosh Addison who won both his schooling races and then followed those up with a win in his first official start. A rail runner with a strong early rush, the one to beat here. The (7) CBJ Firecracker has encountered much trouble as of late but he does have three wins in eighteen races and I believe he can find running room early in this field. The (3) Arkuska Dustin has shown some early speed as of late and has run in much higher grades so will include him here. The (1) Harrison Wright shows potential as he has a win and a second place finish in his young career of two races.
Pick 2-7-3-1
Race 18 - Grade TAA - 820 yards - I like the (3) KR All Amped Up as the one to beat here. She is going after her third straight win and likes it inside. With her good early speed, she should be challenging for the front right out of the box and once she gets it, she's hard to catch. The (1) Flying Uzi has been running good lately with four top three finishes in her last six races and that includes a win and a second place effort. She will make her move down the backstretch and will be a threat to win as well. The (8) RC Holdingspride has a win from the eight box just two races back and must be included as well as the (6) Flying Smoky who despite much trouble in his last three contests still is a threat as he has the early speed to be among the frontrunners.
Pick 3-1-8-6
The Moneymaker play of the evening is in the 10th race, a grade B contest over the 583 yard course and the pick is the (8) Come Back Wilson. This young and impressive greyhound is one of the five up and coming racers that I included on my "Five Greyhounds You Should Be Watching At Southland" post yesterday. He has seven top four finishes in nine races and shows good early speed and worth giving a shot here. Thanks for reading and good luck to everyone.
