Greyhound Preview: Southland for 4/2/2014

April 2nd, 2014

by Mike Johnson

Wednesday's Southland card starts at 4 pm ET and offers several good plays for the greyhound gambler along with a Moneymaker play that has big betting potential.

Race 9 - This B grade distance race of 660 yards has the (6) Pescadojourney, an early speed greyhound who has just missed winning her last 2 races. The (1) KL's Jaegar is coming off a nice win last time and has the class to be close again. Both the (3) Yarborough Bonz and the (8) ZDella deserve consideration for tri and superfecta plays.

Picks: 6 - 1 - 3 - 8

Race10 - Here is a grade B race over the 583 yard course where the (8) Slatex Cheetos is posted well to pull a big upset. The rail position will certainly help the (1) Nitro Stubby, who by the way, was the 2012 Futurity Champ at Southland. He loves the inside and can't be overlooked for the possible win as well. There is an Orange Park invader, the (9) Magic Verizon who had 10 wins at that track in 21 races and she has shown some late close in her 3 races here at Southland. To complete the superfecta play, I will include the (3) Dreamy Approach who has finished 4th or better 7 times in her last 11 races.

Picks: 8 - 1 - 9 - 3

Race11 - Highlighting this AA grade 11th race over the 583 yard course is the (1) U Too Pure Silk who has blazing early speed and who is very hard to catch once he has the lead. He won his last race, also out of the one box, and should be the one to beat here. The (5) CJ Butterfinger gives 100% effort each time as evidenced by her 14 races this year which include 5 wins and being no worse then 4th in any of them. If you are looking for a nice $$$$$ shot I like the (7) Cingalar to be in contention at the finish.

Picks: 1 - 5 - 7 - 6

Race15 - This grade A distance race of 660 yards has the potential for a nice payoff as I look for the (3) Flyin Pink Floyd to be out fast and avoid early trouble enough to grab a nice lead and keep it all the way. The (2) Slatex Rembrandt is more then capable of doing the same as evidenced by his sizzling time of 36.64 and 11 length win a month ago from the 3 box. If either of these greyhounds has trouble, the strong closing (4) Kiowa Shupert has to be included as he will no doubt be flying at the finish. To finish a superfecta play we will add the (8) Ivanhoe.

Picks: 3 - 2 - 4 - 8

Today's Moneymaker play is Race 17, a grade D distance race over the 703 yard course and is the (8) RCK Go Jen. This greyhound gave a good effort in her last race and has the ability of pulling the big upset. She went to the front last time and if she clears early and with the lead again she may be the surprise of the race card. Thanks for reading and good luck with your wagers.
