Single for Saturday’s $17,831 Sunset Six Pick 6 carryover

One of the most enticing carryovers available to chase on Saturday is the $17,831 prize pool in the $1 “Sunset Six” Pick 6.

Sunset Six: $17,831 Pick 6 carryover (4:04 p.m. ET)

The Sunset Six is a special Pick 6 comprised of the final three races apiece at Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita. Saturday’s sequence of races looks competitive on paper; before scratches, there were 55 entries (averaging nearly 9.2 per race) and 570,240 possible outcomes. A few scratches at Gulfstream have been announced, but race-day changes at Santa Anita are still pending.

Identifying a reliable single to build tickets around will go a long way toward reducing the cost and complexity of playing the Sunset Six. Fortunately, #8 Dream Dancer (8-5) looks ready to oblige as a viable single in Leg C of the Sunset Six, which is Race 10 at Gulfstream Park.

Best single: Leg C (Gulfstream Park Race 10): #8 Dream Dancer (8-5)

Gulfstream's 10th race is a $17,500 claimer for three-year-olds and older horses racing one mile on turf. #2 I Wish You Love (6-1) and #4 Beekman Street (4-1) have scratched, leaving a six-horse field. Even picking at random, we have a nearly 17% chance at landing on the winner, so the small field makes Race 10 an ideal place to seek a single.

Dream Dancer is an appealing favorite because he's dropping in class. Last winter at Gulfstream, he finished fourth, fifth, and sixth in a trio of $25,000 starter allowances, and on Aug. 27, he returned from a long layoff to run fifth in a $30,000 claimer racing 1 1/16 miles on turf at Colonial Downs. He finished only 3 1/4 lengths behind runner-up Vaya Jeffe, who flattered the form by returning to win his next start in a $35,000 starter optional claimer at Laurel Park.

Descending to the $17,500 level might be all Dream Dancer needs to vie for victory. He's actually entered for a $16,000 tag, which gives him the benefit of a two-pound weight break. He has the red-hot jockey/trainer duo of Leonel Reyes and Jose D'Angelo in his corner, and he's putting blinkers back on (a 34% winning move for D'Angelo), so the stage appears set for Dream Dancer to secure first prize.

Good luck!
