Greyhound Preview: Southland for 5/12/2014

May 12th, 2014

by Moneymaker Mike

Wow, what a great looking program we have for Monday at Southland Greyhound Park.  It is loaded with plenty of stakes racing and several other races which look to be primed for upset possibilities. Highlighting the evening's card is the third round races of the 2014 Southland Razorback Classic stakes challenge and there are six of these contests. Also this evening there are several excellent opportunities to cash in on some nice longshots and upset specials so with that in mind I've concentrated Monday's picks on those races. Good luck to all and thanks for reading.

Race 2 - First surprise of the evening comes early, this is a grade TC contest over the 703 yard course and I'm going with the (1) Zatrite to get the upsets started. He encountered much trouble last time out and still only finished 3 1/2 lengths back. His slow break should help him avoid early trouble and with a strong late kick has the bottom to catch the leaders in the stretch. The (4) Pink Cadillac has plenty of early speed and along with the (7) KL's Kelly, these two should be vying for the lead right out of the box. The (6) PJ Im A Jammer deserves some consideration off a fine effort last time out and I'll use him to complete the tri and superfecta plays.

Picks: 1 - 4 - 7 - 6

Race 3 - Right back with another upset special in this grade M race over the 583 yard course and the choice here is the (7) Big Boy Beer who has a nice rush and who should be able to avoid early trouble this time out. The (1) Oshkosh Alrick has yet to have a clean trip in his first four races but has shown some potential and with that in mind, willing to give him a shot here. Both the (8) Mojoe Foxie and the (3) Broken Halo are posted well for their running styles and each is capable of some early speed so will use them to complete the ticket.

Picks: 7 - 1 - 8 - 3

Race 5 - Upset alert in this grade B contest over the 660 yard course with the (1) Distant Days being the choice. This young and talented pup has a bright future ahead for sure and the fact that he likes the inside and is dropping in grade should give him the edge here. Last race was his first time over the distance course and he gave a good effort by finishing fourth so I'm looking for a better finish here. The (7) Ivanhoe is always a threat and certainly has the class to get it done. The (2) Dinerojax will be coming strong down the stretch and the (8) PJ Payingthebill is coming off a win at this distance last time out so I will use both to complete my ticket.

Picks: 1 - 7 - 2 - 8

Race 7 - This is the last of our upset Monday specials, a grade SAA race over the 660 yard course. This is one of the 2014 Southland Razorback classic third round stakes races and I'm sticking with the (1) Dexter Ambigram who as some of you may remember is one of my favorite greyhounds at the track because of the 110% efforts he gives each time out. This young but very talented pup only took ten races to go from M to A grade and once he got to A grade, he has stayed there with five of his wins coming in A or AA grade. It is a stakes race so anything is possible but I like him to handle this tough field. In the chase I'll use the hard running (2) Gusta Of Ruckus who is going for her third win in four races. Also worth a look are the always tough (3) Gigawatt and the strong closing (6) Kiowa Shupert.

Picks: 1 - 2 - 3 - 6

This evening's Moneymaker play is in the 14th race, a grade D contest over the 583 yard course and and a race in which I'm picking the (3) O Ya Gordy. He shows some early speed and some late closing ability so I'm overlooking his last two races in which he encountered trouble. Since he's not on the morning line I'm thinking there should be good odds on him here.
