Greyhound Preview: Southland for 5/15/2014
by Moneymaker Mike
This evening's program is a good one with several good opportunities to cash in on some well posted upset possibilities and a couple of solid AA grade contests with one race featuring a member of the greyhound 2013 All-American team. It should be an exciting night at Southland so let's get started with the picks. Thanks for reading and good luck to all.
Race 7 - Grade M - 583 yards - I am going with the wide running (7) Boc's Ms Hattie to pull a big upset here. She is well posted in this contest and has six top four finishes in her young ten race career and with the outside box is worthy of a shot at winning, especially as the morning line has her odds at 11-1. The (2) Girlsaroundhere likes the inside and has drawn the two box for the third straight time and her early speed should give her lead right out of the box. The (8) Kiowa Cocoanut is running her first official race after having five schooling races, she appears to have a wide running style as evidenced by her last schooling effort, a win out of the eight box. Finishing out the play I will use the (6) Hl's Twix who runs mid-track and may clear the first turn in good shape.
Picks: 7 - 2 - 8 - 6
Race 10 - Grade B - 583 yards - With the seven dog not breaking and the eight dog going early to the rail my pick here is the (9) Arkuska Della. This greyhound likes it mid to wide and she has a nice rush and with the drop in grade she should handle this field. The (1) Cam Dynamite likes the rail, has decent early speed and can't be overlooked in this one. He is a Wheeling invader but seems to adapting well to the Southland track. The (6) Mega Pennie is from Caliente and also has good early speed and could be a big surprise as stated above, the seven dog does not break. That being said, the (7) Bob's Firstclass has tremendous closing ability and I'll use him to complete the ticket as he will certainly be flying down the stretch.
Picks: 9 - 1 - 6 - 7
Race 11 - Grade AA - 583 yards - A very competitive field of class greyhounds going paw to paw but I'll take the (1) WW's Grover to pull out the win at the wire. He loves the rail and does have two wins and two second place finishes in his last six races, all in this grade. I look for him to be vying for the lead early and once in front, I believe he stays there. There will be stiff completion in this race and the (5) War Wagon will be one of those strong contenders. He is going for five wins in a row here and he is more than capable of doing so. This talented field of eight also includes the new transfer from Palm Beach where he had eight quiniela finishes in thirteen races, the (2) Smokey Joe. Not to be overlooked for tri and superfecta plays, the (4) Alone All Alone is coming off a six length win himself.
Picks: 1 - 5 - 2 - 4
Race 18 - Grade AA - 583 yards - What better way to finish the evening's racing then with one of the best greyhounds at Southland showing his stuff, the (1) Kiowa Producer. He is a member of the 2013 All-American greyhound team and won the 2013 World Classic stakes at Mardi Gras as well as the 2013 Southland Derby. He is the real deal, no doubt about it. In the chase for second I'll use the young and talented pup the (6) CBJ Old Glory who started his career by going from grade M to grade A with five straight wins. He ran a close second last time out in this grade and the future sure looks bright for him. I'll use the (8) Mega Badge and the (2) RC Chasemyshadow to complete my ticket as both are capable of a big effort.
Picks: 1 - 6 - 8 - 2
The Moneymaker play of the evening is in the 8th race, a grade C contest over the 583 yard course and I'm going with the rail running (1) KB's Rocket City. He is a double drop in class and draws the inside post and with not being on the morning line may bring a nice price so well worth the risk here in my opinion.
