Greyhound Preview: Southland for 5/23/2014
by Moneymaker Mike
What an evening of championship greyhound racing we have for tonight as the 2014 Southland Razorback Classic stakes comes to a close with both the consolation and finals races being run. I have both of these contests included in this evening's picks as well as several other top grade AA races.
Race 9 - Grade SAA - 660 yards - Here we have the 2014 Southland Razorback Consolation race and the pick is the (4) Flying Disciple. He has three wins and a second place finish over this distance in his last six races and like several other greyhounds in this field, barely missed out on making the finals and in my opinion is the one to beat here. The (7) Flyin Pink Floyd is in position to clear early and does have the speed to be vying for the lead right out of the box. This is a very competitive field but I'm also giving both the (3) Commodore and the (2) Barts Hammerdown a shot at making the tri and superfecta tickets.
Picks: 4 - 7 - 3 - 2
Race 11 - Grade SAA - 660 yards - This is the highlight of the week, the finals of the 2014 Southland Razorback Classic stakes contest and in this very tough and talented championship field, I'm going with the (5) Topline Drive to win a close one at the wire. He won three of the four rounds heading into this final and looks ready to romp again. The (4) Gigawatt has been running hard lately and will be closing fast on the rail and is capable of pulling off a big upset here. Also a threat in this very competitive finals is the (6) Branding Iron who has a very good rush and is coming off an impressive six length win. Finishing the play I will use the early speed (1) PJ You Ask Why.
Picks: 5 - 4 - 6 - 1
Race 15 - Grade AA - 583 yards - Another talented greyhound is the pick here as I like the (8) Atascocita Gray to get his fifth win in his last seven races. He likes it mid to wide and with his big rush is posted well, the last two times he has had the eight box he has won by seven and twelve and a half lengths. The (4) Beryl Drumm should be coming fast at the finish and I will also use both the (5) Slatex Aspen and the (2) WW Fastrak Joe to finish out the tri and superfecta plays.
Picks: 8 - 4 - 5 - 2
Race 18 - Grade TAA - 820 yards - A super marathon race to end the card and the play here is going to be the (4) Gracie Of Ruckus. This greyhound has been giving 110% lately as evidenced by her three wins and two second place finishes in her last six contests over this demanding course. With her early speed, she should be the frontrunner out of the box and the key here. The (8) Flying Smoky will also be out quickly and trying for the lead. I like the fast closing (2) Flying Uzi to close on the leaders down the stretch and I won't overlook the (5) KL's Pete who could steal the lead if any of the frontrunners encounter trouble at the start.
Picks: 4 - 8 - 2 - 5
The Moneymaker play of the program is in the 6th race, a grade A contest over the 583 yard course and the choice is the rail running (1) Smart As Ever. Last time he had the one box in A grade, he went box to wire, I'm looking for a repeat performance here.
