Greyhound Preview: Southland for 5/9/2014

May 9th, 2014

by Moneymaker Mike

The weekend is here and a full slate of 18 exciting races is in store at Southland this evening. As you may have noticed there are only five distance races on the card so I have focused my picks on the 583 yard course contests. There are several that stand out as very viable wagering opportunities so let's get started early on a winning night at the track. Good luck to all and thanks for reading.

Race 2 - This is a grade B contest over the 583 yard course and I'm going with the (1) Flyin Brick Road who not only likes the inside but is dropping in grade here. He has encountered much trouble lately but I look for him to be able to clear early and stay in front. The (2) Mega Gilroy has a good rush and even though he is a young greyhound he has shown talent already with eight top four finishes in the first nine races of his career. The (6) CBJ Treat may be the surprise of the race so for a shot at a nice payoff, I'll put her in my plays. Completing the ticket will be the (4) Arkuska Dustin who has early speed and will be vying for the front right out of the box.

Picks: 1 - 2 - 6 - 4

Race 5 - Here is a grade C race over the 660 yard course and it's a big upset special as I like                      the (1) It My Turn to be in position to steal the win at the wire. Every once in a while you just feel like taking a shot and that's what I'm doing here with this greyhound in this tough field. This is his second race at this distance and I'm going off his good effort he gave last time out in his first race over the 660 yard course before tiring out late. The (6) Meashur is a double drop greyhound who likes it mid to wide so he is posted well here. Also in the chase should be the (4) KB's Alpine and the (5) K's Krieger.

Picks: 1 - 6 - 4 - 5

Race 11 - This should be one exciting grade AA race over the 583 yard course as it features some outstanding Southland hounds going paw to paw for the win. I'm going with the (2) Smokey Joe who is one of the 2013 All-American greyhounds. Also capable of winning this contest is the hard running (6) WW's Grover who is going for his third win in his last four races. Not to be outdone, the (8) War Wagon is going for his fourth straight win himself. Finishing out my tri and superfecta plays will be the (1) HL's Travis.

Picks: 2 - 6 - 8 - 1

Race 17 - Here is another grade AA contest over the 583 yard course and the (7) Kiowa Producer gets the nod here despite having his seven race winning streak ended last time out. Too much talent for me to ever leave this champion off the ticket. The (8) Mega Reesy has hit the quiniela in five of her last six races and should be close by again. The strong close of the (4) Kiowa Jared is a must for tri and superfecta plays and I'll use the (6) Bumblebee Drive in case there is early trouble among the favorites.

Picks: 7 - 8 - 4 - 6

Tonight's Moneymaker play is in the 12th race, a grade A contest over the 583 yard course and is the (7) Turbo Omars Red. The drop in grade should help along with the seven box, a box he won out of just four races ago in the same grade.
