Greyhound Preview: Southland for 6/27/2014
by Moneymaker Mike
What an entertaining evening of greyhound racing Southland has in store for us tonight, 18 exciting races which are highlighted by the running of the 2014 Southland Derby Championship final as well as the Southland Derby Consolation race. Some of the best and most talented greyhounds in the country are running in these contests this evening and we have included both of these races in the picks below. Good luck to all and thanks for reading.
Race 9 - Grade SAA - 583 yard course - This is the 2014 Southland Derby Consolation race and the pick here is the (2) Mega Vast who is coming off an impressive six length win last time out. He likes the inside and is going for his fourth win in his last seven races. The (4) Flying Riot will also be a threat for the win as he likes it mid-track and may try to go early here and contend for lead right out of the box. The (6) Dexter Ambigram has three second place finishes in his last four races and with a late run down the stretch could pull the upset here. Finishing the play I will use the (1) Kebo Bellagio who won from this same one box just a few races ago.
Pick 2-4-6-1
Race 11 - Grade SAA - 583 yard course - Here is the 2014 Southland Derby Championship race and I'm going with the (4) Kiowa Producer to add another stakes title to his resume. In the past four rounds of this stakes event, he has three wins and a second place finish. Even in an extremely competitive field of eight outstanding greyhounds, with his early speed, strong rush and box to wire domination, he's still my pick to win. The (8) Branding Iron has run impressively lately and is going for his third straight win and fourth in his last five races and will be a strong contender here I believe. The (7) Atascocita Gray is also after his third win in a row and with a big early rush and mid-track running style, very capable of winning here as well. To finish the tri and superfecta plays I will include the (6) Flying Titanium, a very talented greyhound himself and who already has 24 wins in 35 races at this track.
Pick 4-8-7-6
Race 17 - Grade AA - 660 yard course - I'm going with the (8) Smokey Joe to be the key in this one as he likes it mid-track and should come out fast and furious with paws ablazin and be in good shape early to contend for the win. The (3) CBJ Tias Luv is also in a good spot to make a bid for the lead and it won't be a surprise to see these two battling it out all the way to the finish line. I will include both the (2) Kiowa Shupert who has a ton of late speed and will be flying at the end and the (6) Commodore who is also a big closer.
Pick 8-3-2-6
Race 18 - Grade TAA - 820 yard course - The always exciting super marathon race ends the card and the pick is the (4) KL's Wanda who has tons of early speed and who has just missed winning her last two contests, beaten by a head in both of them. She has a mid-track running style and should be out fast here and be able to avoid any early trouble. The (6) Flying Smoky will also be out quickly and vying for the lead. I will use two strong closers to finish out the ticket as both the (7) GS Sidney and the (3) Flying Uzi will kick it in gear down the stretch and make a big move late.
Pick 4-6-7-3
The Moneymaker pick for the night is in the 2nd race, a grade C contest over the 660 yard course and is the (1) Flyin Red Raider. I like him because he loves the inside and is a double drop in class and he does have both a C grade and B grade win from the one box so well worth a play in this race.
