Greyhound Preview: Southland for 6/30/2014
by Moneymaker Mike
Monday's card at Southland has a full slate of 18 exciting races scheduled for this last day of June and among them are several which caught my attention as being good wagering opportunities. With the 4th of July holiday quickly approaching, wouldn't it be nice to get it started with a bang by hitting a few nice paying races and putting some cash in our pockets. Good luck to all and thanks for reading.
Race 3 - Grade M - 583 yards - Starting the picks tonight with a maiden race and the choice is the
(3) Quirky Hooligan who barely missed winning last time out by finishing second, beaten by less then a length. She has three top four finishes in five races and with her early speed and mid to wide running style is my key here. The (6) PJ All Romance has also been running hard as evidenced by his seven top four finishes in nine races. He likes it mid-track and will be vying for the early lead as well. Completing the tri and superfecta plays I will use the (7) Slatex Waveen who will be closing hard and the (1) Hank Of Ruckus who has a strong early rush.
Picks: 3 - 6 - 7 - 1
Race 4 - Grade A - 583 yards - The one to beat here is the (2) AMF Bad Bounce. This well rested greyhound has been off the track for two months and in his first schooling race back won by 8 1/2 lengths so with that impressive win I'm going with him as the key. The (1) Orion's Belt is a young but hard running pup that has steadily moved up in grade and with the dogs in the two and three boxes going wide, he may find himself drawing a big benefit early. I also like the (8) JT Redneck Romeo and the (5) Rawlings as both of them have early speed and could challenge for the lead right out of the box.
Picks: 2 - 1 - 8 - 5
Race 12 - Grade D - 583 yards - Here we have a longshot that may be the upset special of the night, it's the (8) CBJ Firecracker. Even though he has finished fifth or worse in his last three contests, he does have five top three finishes in ten races and is a drop in class who does have a good rush to the turn. I look for him to get out early and avoid first turn trouble to be in good shape to finish strong. The (7) Flying Tiger Eye is coming off her first career win and will try to to early as well. The (2) AMF Sunny Honey has a strong closing move and the (1) Rachel Zane has been the leader at the top of the stretch in three of her last five races and can't be overlook for tri and superfecta plays.
Picks: 8 - 7 - 2 - 1
Race 18 - Grade TAA - 660 yards - The key here is the (4) Flying Shotgun who has thirteen top four finishes in nineteen races since coming here from Derby Lane where he had eleven top four finishes in eleven races. With that consistency, and four wins already at Southland, he's my choice here. The (1) Lucia is on fire with two wins and and three seconds in her last five races, all over this same distance course and may go paw to paw with Flying Shotgun from start to finish. Completing the ticket, should either of these two run into trouble, I'm going with the(7) Slatex Rembrandt who is going for his third straight win and the (2) Braska Dillon who runs good on the inside.
Picks: 4 - 1 - 7 - 2
The Moneymaker play of the evening is in the 2nd race, a grade C contest over the 583 yard course and is the (7) CBJ Waterford. She has been encountering trouble as of late but does already have three wins in her young career of ten races and just a few races ago won a race in the sizzling time of 31.58 from the six box. With the odds she will have here, I am going to give her a shot.
