Greyhound Preview: Southland for 7/17/2014

July 17th, 2014

by Moneymaker Mike

A full slate of greyhound action is scheduled for Thursday evening at Southland as there are 18 exciting races on tap including a couple of maiden contests that grabbed my attention. There are also a couple of AA grade race that looks promising for wagering action so let's get on with the show. Good luck to all and thanks for reading.

Race 3 - Grade M - 583 yard course - The pick here is the (8) Senator Susan who likes it mid-track and has a nice rush so the outside box should be the edge for her. She has six top four finishes in her young career of eight races and I look for her to get her first win here. The (6) Arkaska Tony has a lot of early speed and should be the leader right out of the box and capable of the win as well. I look for the (3) HS Honey Bee to also be out fast and I'm throwing out her last race where she was bumped and finished sixth after two schooling wins in her previous starts. Finishing the play will be the (1) LK's Festival who has four top four efforts in seven races.

Pick 8-6-3-1

Race 7 - Grade AA - 583 yard course - Here we have the (4) Atascocita Gray as the key as this very talented greyhound was the recent winner of the 2014 Southland Derby stakes contest. He is going for his sixth win in seven races so definitely the one to beat in this race. The (2) Kiowa Oriole is more than capable of going paw to paw with him as she finished third to Atascocita Gray in the finals of the Southland Derby and with her good rush, should be in good position early. The (6) Western Road and the (1) Quick Reply are worth putting on the ticket as they could be the ones to benefit should there be any early trouble among the frontrunners.

Pick 4-2-6-1

Race 9 - Grade M - 583 yard course - I'm going with the (7) Keeper Ratchet in this one as she encountered trouble last time out in her first official race. This impressive young pup had three very sharp schooling races in which she had two big wins so I'm going to come right back with her once again as the one to beat. The (1) PJ Confession has six top four finishes in twelve starts and ran a strong second the last time she had the one box so I'm confident of a nice effort from her here. The (3) Slatex Aladdin may be the surprise of the race as he shows both early speed and the ability to come from behind. Finishing the tri and superfecta plays I will include the (8) RP Big Red who will also be out fast and trying for the lead.

Pick 7-1-3-8

Race 11 - Grade AA - 660 yard course - The key here is the (5) Topline Drive who is going for his third straight win over this course. This hard running and talented greyhound has tons of late speed and I look for him to close strong down the stretch to get the win. I like both the (2) Bold Deceiver and the (7) Dutch Dice to be in the chase as they turn for home as they do show some early speed and they can also make a late run as well. The (1) Reality Check It likes the inside and will have some running room early so I'll include him in on my ticket.

Pick 5-2-7-1

The Moneymaker play of the evening is the 18th race, a grade AA contest over the 703 yard course and is the (1) Magic Evo. I look for her to pull the upset as she has three wins, two seconds and a third place finish in her last nine races over this distance and all have been in grade AA except one which was in A grade. This is a very tough field but the odds should be good enough on her to warrant me giving her a shot.
