Greyhound Preview: Southland for 7/18/2014
by Moneymaker Mike
Welcome to another Friday evening at the Southland track where a full card of 18 exciting races await us. There are some up and coming young greyhounds running as well as some solid veteran top grade performers and I've included several of those races in the picks below. Overall the program looks promising with solid opportunities to cash some nice tickets. Good luck to all and thanks for reading.
Race 5 - Grade B - 583 yard course - The key here is the (8) Dexter Ambigram who has 22 top four finishes in 35 races including a win from the eight box in a Grade AA stakes race back in April. This greyhound always gives 110% and though he has encountered trouble of late I believe he gets back on track here. There is a lot of early speed in this race and I will use bot the (2) Ivanhoe and the (3) Cosmic Gold as two greyhounds who should be battling for the lead right out of the box. I will include the (1) AMF Sunny Moon for tri and superfecta plays as he has five top three finishes in his last six races.
Pick 8-2-3-1
Race 8 - Grade C - 583 yard course - I'm going with the (3) Slatex Athens as the key as he is a double drop in class having been running in grade A just a few weeks ago. Last time out, which was his first race in C grade since dropping, he encountered much trouble so I'm going to overlook that finish as I believe he has a good shot at the early lead. The (8) RCL Golden Missle will probably be the betting favorite since he is going for his third straight win and though I think he will be close at the end, I think Slatex Athens is the one to beat. I will include in my play the (9) Vogo Banderas who likes it mid to wide and the (2) Boc's Bonkers who has some nice closing ability.
Pick 3-8-9-2
Race 14 - Grade D - 583 yard course - I like the (5) Vanzant in this one as he is gaining experience with each race of his very young career. He has three top four finishes in his only three official starts including a 4 1/2 length win last time out. He likes the inside and has a nice early rush so I'm keying him here. The (7) AMF Gaslight has unfortunately been bumped in his last four races but I'm thinking he avoids trouble in this one and closes hard down the stretch. The (8) KL's Seth needs the inside but does have decent early speed and could find himself near the front around the turn. Finishing the tri and superfecta plays I'll use the (2) Mojoe Atlas as he likes the rail and could slip thru if any of the leaders have early trouble.
Pick 5-7-8-2
Race 17 - Grade SAA - 820 yard course - Here we have the always entertaining and exciting super marathon race and it's a tough call between the (8) AMF Prickly and the (6) SE's Truckdriver. Both of these nice greyhounds like it wide and both of them have a strong closing run as well but I'll give the slight edge to AMF Prickly as he does show some early speed and SE's Truckdriver is coming off a two month layoff. The (2) GS Anthony and the (1) WW's Kin both have the consistency on the track that you like to see and I'll use them to complete the ticket.
Pick 8-6-2-1
The Moneymaker play of the evening is in the 7th race, a grade AA contest over the 583 yard course and is the (6) Manhatin. This extremely talented greyhound has been off the track for three months but he looked good in his schooling race where he finished a strong second after leading most of the race. He may need a couple of races to get all the way back in form but I'm going with him here and hoping since he's not on the morning line that he will go off at good odds.
