Greyhound Preview: Southland for 7/31/2014
by Moneymaker Mike
Another fun filled evening at Southland Greyhound Park with 18 always exciting and entertaining races on tap. The picks for this program are at each end of the class system with two picks in grade M and two picks in Grade A. You will see up and coming young greyhounds giving their all as well as solid and seasoned veterans doing the same so let's the party started. Good luck to all and thanks for reading.
Race 3 - Grade M - 583 yards - I'm going with the (3) Falossuhfee as the key in this one. He shows a good early rush and just missed winning last time out as he lost by a neck at the wire. He likes it mid to wide and I believe he's out fast and gets good position early in which to contend for the win. Both the (2) Slatex Waveen and the (1) Closed Account should be the main challengers as they each show good consistency in their previous efforts. The 2 can come from behind and the 1 has tons of early speed so I'll use both of them here. For tri and superfecta plays, I'm using the (4) PJ Picknroll, he's had nothing but trouble late but should he get a clean trip you might be surprised.
Pick 3-2-1-4
Race 7 - Grade M - 583 yards - Another maiden contest and the pick here is the (2) Counselor. This young greyhound shows two wins in schooling and in his first official start ran a very strong race in which he was flying down the stretch and lost only by a nose. Good early speed and a big finish makes him my key here. The (1) Kiowa Trapdoor likes the inside and may find early running room in which to make a bid for the lead. The (8) Yikiteyak could benefit from is post position as he likes it mid-track and could find herself in good position around the turn. Finishing the play I'm including the (5) Bob's Looker because of his second place effort last time out.
Pick 2-1-8-5
Race 11 - Grade AA - 583 yards - I'm going with the (2) WW's Grover as the key in this one. With his good early speed and inside running style he should be among the frontrunners early and just a few races back won a grade A contest from this same two box he has here. I also like the (5) Branding Iron to challenge for the win as this hard running greyhound always gives 110% and I look for him to be closing fast at the finish. The (7) Slatex Aspen is a nice young pup who has shown potential and she is capable of hitting the lid and could steal the early lead. The (1) L's Prescott has just arrived here from the Bluffs Run track and looked impressive in his schooling race winning by three lengths so worth a shot in case he repeats that effort in this race.
Pick 2-5-7-1
Race 17 - Grade A - 660 yards - The choice here is the (4) AMF Bad Bounce who was off the track for two months but seems to be getting back in form as evidenced by his strong second place effort last time out. I look for him to close hard down the stretch and win this one at the wire. The (8) Flying Zinc likes it mid-track and with her good rush should find running room early and position herself to make a late run. I'll use the rail running (2) Reality Check it as well as the (3) Braska Olive You who has six straight top three finishes to compete the play.
Pick 4-8-2-3
The Moneymaker play of the evening is in the 9th race, a grade D contest over the 660 yard course and the pick is the (4) Kelso's Maverick. He mainly runs the 583 yard course but has had problems lately in getting around the first turn over that course so the longer distance could help him in that regard. He has only had four races over this distance but in two of those contests, he had the four box and he finished second and third in them. I believe he will be the leader out of the box and the one to catch. He's worth giving a shot since the odds should be good.
