Greyhound Preview: Southland for 7/5/2014

July 5th, 2014

by Moneymaker Mike

This evening's Southland greyhound card has 18 exciting and entertaining races on tap for us to enjoy this Saturday. There are some good wagering opportunities both early and late in the program and I concentrated the picks on those and I hope we can finish the holiday weekend on a winning note. Good luck to all and thanks for reading.

Race 2 - Grade C - 660 yard course - The key here is the (3) A Nun With A Gun who has been running hard as evidenced by her having eight straight top three finishes including a win, six seconds and a third. She has a lot of early speed and likes the inside so the key she is. Also a threat for the win is the (1) Arkans Bd Sylar, another early speed rail runner who is a double drop in class. These two should battle paw to paw from start to finish. The (2) Kay Rock Sweet gives 110% each time out and is going for her second straight win and I'll use her as well as the (8) Atwater who is no stranger to this distance course having run third in an A grade race over this distance late last year.

Pick 3-1-2-8

Race 4 - Grade C - 583 yard course - I'm going with the (3) PJ Super Duper as the key in this one as this is his first race since dropping in grade from A to C and I look for him to be out fast and avoid early trouble to clear the first turn and be in good position to get the win to challenge for the win. The (6) PJ Refined is off to a great start to her career with two wins and a second place finish so far in her first four races so it's not wise to overlook her here. I also like the (7) Boc's Crusher who likes it mid to wide and is coming off a nice four length win last time out. Finishing the play I am including the (1) KB's Power Punch who likes the inside.

Pick 3-6-7-1

Race 11 - Grade A - 583 yard course - I like the (7) Beryl Drumm to be the surprise of the race as he likes it outside to go along with his mid to wide running style. He ran decent in the recently held Southland Derby stakes contest and with 20 top four finishes in 27 races, I think he is the key here.  Both the (1) Rawlins and the (3) Kiowa Abby Brown like the inside and have good early speed so look for them to be battling for the lead right out of the box. I will include the invader from the Gulf Greyhound track the (8) KB's Big Rig to finish the ticket as he had 10 top four finishes in 11 races at that track and schooled well in his first track appearance at Southland.

Pick 7-1-3-8

Race 18 - Grade TAA - 660 yard course - The (4) Deacon Clayborne is the pick here. I look for him to be out early and if he does get the lead, he will be hard to catch. He has a nice rush and is capable of going box to wire. The (6) Flying Zinc also has early speed and likes it mid to wide and may be among the frontrunners right out of the box. The (1) WW Wise Up has the box he likes for his rail running style and will be a threat for the tri and superfecta plays as will the (8) Flying Shotgun who can utilize his closing ability to make a late run.

Pick 4-6-1-8

The Moneymaker play of the evening is in the 12th race, a grade D race over the 583 yard course and the pick is the (9) Boc's Bonkers. This young greyhound has 7 top four finishes in 9 races and has a good early rush and is gaining experience each time out. Last time he had the nine box, he ran third. With the speed he has I am looking for him to have a better finish here.
