Greyhound Preview: Southland for 7/9/2014

July 9th, 2014

by Moneymaker Mike

Another entertaining lineup of 18 exciting greyhound races are on tap for this evening at Southland and several of these caught my interest as they showcase some up and coming talented greyhounds along with a couple of proven winners. I have concentrated the picks on those contests listed below and I look to put some money in our pockets with them.

Race 1 - Grade D - 583 yard course - I'm going with the (6) Border Campaign as the one to beat here. This young and talented pup started his career with three impressive schooling wins and followed that up with a twelve length win in his first official start. Last time out he encountered trouble and still came away with a third place effort so he's the key  in this one. I will use both the (3) Slatex Daytona and the (4) Flying Tigerlady as they show some early speed as well as a decent rush. Finishing the play I'll include the (1) PJ Diplomatic who likes the rail and who won from the one box a few weeks back.

Pick 6-3-4-1

Race 4 - Grade AA - 583 yard course - The (4) U Too Pure Silk is the pick in this one as he is getting back in form after a couple of tough races in the recently completed 2014 Southland Derby stakes contest. He has a win and a close second place finish in his last two races and with his good rush should be the one to beat here. Also a big threat are the (1) Gus Mcrae who likes the inside and the (7) Flying Rainmaker who likes it mid-track. I will include the (2) HL's Travis for tri and superfecta plays as he likes it outside but he does have a win from the two box just a few races back.

Pick 4-1-7-2

Race 14 - Grade TD - 660 yard course - The choice in this race is the (3) Slatex Sandstorm as last time out he held the lead until being caught in the stretch and finishing third, losing only by a length. That was his first race after dropping in grade and I look for him to hang on for the win this time. The (7) Oshkosh Whitney is also a grade dropper who has had some trouble as of late but still capable of a big run so I won't overlook her in this race. A couple of other worthy greyhounds to consider are the (4) Backwood Sheriff and the (5) Sitasin.

Pick 3-7-4-5

Race 17 - Grade TA - 703 yard course - I like the (1) SE's Jet Fuel in this race because in his last twelve races at this distance he has accumulated two wins, four seconds and three third place finishes. He will be making a strong move down the backstretch and flying at the end so he's my key here. Both the (5) WW's Spark Gap and the (2) TF Ashley are capable of big runs and can't be left off the ticket as both have good early speed and will be vying for the lead right out of the box. I will use the outside running (7) Boc's Adalyne to complete the play.

Pick 1-5-2-7

The Moneymaker play of the evening is in the 15th race, a grade C race over the 660 yard course and is the (3) Magic Sprint. This greyhound was at the Mardi Gras track for fourteen races and had eight top four finishes including six wins in those races. He has dropped in class from grade A and in his first C race last time out ran a very respectable third after being bumped. I look for him to run even better in this race.
