Greyhound Preview: Southland for 8/4/2014

August 4th, 2014

by Moneymaker Mike

Monday's card at Southland has 18 exciting races on tap and after looking at the program, some good wagering opportunities drew my closer attention. I have listed those below in the picks and they include both lower grade and top grade greyhounds which feature some talented young pups showing their skills. Good luck to all and thanks for reading.

Race 1 - Grade D - 583 yards - The key here is the (5) Counselor, all this impressive young pup has done is win both schooling races and then comes back with a fine second place effort in his first official race and he follows that up with a very convincing twelve length win. Looks like he's the real deal and the one to beat in this one. The (7) Atascocita Rex has early speed and likes it mid-track and should find running room right out of the box. The (2) P Kay Lovestrike has 21 top four finishes in 35 races and is a definite threat for the tri and superfecta plays. She needs to break good here to avoid early trouble. I'll include the (4) PJ Feather Dave who has shown potential and who has four top four efforts in his very young career. Breaks good and has closing ability as well.

Pick 5-7-2-4

Race 5 - Grade M - 583 yards - Going with the (3) Fly Aqib Talib in his first official race of his career as he is coming off two schooling wins and shows a good rush and an inside running style. The (6) Yikiteyak runs mid-track and also has a good rush to the turn so she could be among the frontrunners around the first turn and

must be included in the play. I'll throw in a longshot on my ticket as the (8) Dali Jo seems to want it wide so he is positioned well for his first official race. The (4) Keeper Ticket shows some closing ability so if there's early trouble among the frontrunners, she could be the one to benefit with a strong run down the stretch.

Pick 3-6-8-4

Race 7 - Grade AA - 583 yards - I like the (1) WW's Grover to win a close one here as he loves the rail and in his seven races from the one box in 2014, he has 3 wins and 2 seconds among them. One box should be the edge he needs to handle this field. I will use the hard running (8) CR Joe as he has three wins and a second place effort in his last four races, certainly a threat once again here. The (6) CBJ Twix and the (7) Flying Riot are solid runners and I can't overlook either one of them as both are capable of big races.

Pick 1-8-6-7

Race 17 - Grade TAA - 820 yards - The always entertaining and exciting super marathon race will be a very competitive one but I'm going with the (7) Flying Smoky to hit the lid and hold off the rest of the field while winning one at the wire. He has tons of early speed and should have a decent enough lead to hold off the challengers down the stretch. The (8) RC Holdingspride has 26 top four finishes in 32 races and has been running good despite having trouble in four of his last five efforts. He's gives 110% each time out and and it won't be any different here. Finishing the play I'll use both the (2) GS Sidney and the (6) Flying Uzi  as they are strong closers and should be coming strong down the stretch.

Pick 7-8-2-6

The Moneymaker play of the evening is in 15th race, a grade C contest over the 660 yard course and the pick is the (2) Ivanhoe. I'm going with him as I believe not only is he the class of the race, he has a B grade win from the two box earlier this season over this same distance course. I'm overlooking his last two poor efforts as they were over the shorter course and because of that the odds should be good on him here. He's worth a shot in my opinion and could pay decent.
