Greyhound Preview: Southland for 8/9/2014

August 9th, 2014

by  Moneymaker Mike

Welcome to another Saturday evening at Southland Greyhound park where the card has 18 exciting greyhound races on tap for our viewing and wagering opportunities. The picks for this program are concentrated on the lower grade classes as I like the possibilities of some really nice payoffs. Good luck to all and thanks for reading.

Race 2 - Grade C - 660 yards - The key here is the (3) Kay Matt Kim who is a double drop in grade and with her early speed, should be able to hit the front and hang on to the lead. She has faded in her past two races but I think the lead will be big enough that she won't be caught. The (4) Flying Tigerbaby will be her strongest challenge as this young greyhound has been impressive in her short career and she's coming off a win over this distance last time out. These two should be the ones to battle for the win. I do like the (8) Bob Woolf as he has  five top four finishes in his last six races including a win and two seconds. I'll use the (5) Kelsos Conor who just arrived here from the Derby Lane track and ran a nice schooling race over this distance last time out.

Pick 3-4-8-5

Race 3 - Grade M - 583 yards - I'm going with the (8) CBJ Laura B as the one to beat. This young greyhound has only had one official start, a nice second place finish last time out. Before that, she had a couple of good schooling contests, she is well posted for her mid-track running style and has the early speed to challenge for the lead right out of the box. The (7) Arkans Emporess also has an outside running style and has three top four finishes in her short career. I look for her to be coming from behind with a strong late run. The (1) Pokémon Episode looks to be a rail runner so I'll include him as well as playing the (5) Lily Adams who's coming off an eight length schooling win.

Pick 8-7-1-5

Race 4 - Grade D - 660 yards - A tough race to handicap but I'm going with the (7) Go Bon Watchthis as she is the class of the race and being a double drop in grade, should be the one to beat. I think she finds running room early and avoids the trouble she's been encountering in most of her recent races. The (1) Kelsos Maverick gets the rail post and since he likes the inside, and since he's coming off a second and a third place effort in his last three races I'll certainly use him. Both the (3) Sakata and the (4) Hickel have good early speed and I will include them as either or both could steal a lead and hang on, at least for tri and superfecta plays.

Pick 7-1-3-4

Race 13 - Grade B - 583 yards - Here we have an up and coming very talented greyhound, the (2) Border Campaign who has steadily moved up in grade and I'm going with him as the key here. He has a nice rush to the turn, likes the inside and is eight out of eight in the money with three wins so far in his young career. The (8) Flying Dicaprio has fallen on tough times as of late but is coming off a couple weeks of being off the track and since he has the class and likes it wide, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Both the (5) Crt Qadeer and the (6) WW's Wrecknralph have recently arrived from the Palm Beach and Birmingham tracks and both ran grade A at those tracks and could be big surprises here.

Pick 2-8-5-6

The Moneymaker play of the evening is in the 17th race, a grade TC contest over the super marathon course of 820 yards and the pick is the (7) Greenisle King. Some of you may remember I've used this greyhound a few times as both a Moneymaker play and as the key without good results but I'm willing to give him one more shot. This is the first time I can ever remember where a greyhound has raced at four different distances at a track in less than a month. He has competed over the 583, 660 and 703 yard distances and is now running over the 820 yard course. He has an outside running style and is well posted here and on a sidenote, while he only has two top four finishes in his 13 races at Southand, a second and a fourth place effort, they both came from the seven box which he has this evening. Worth at least a small play one more time as the odds should be very good.
