Harness Preview for 9/23/2014

September 23rd, 2014

Although many standardbred tracks offer their most competitive cards on Friday and Saturday evenings, the Tuesday cards at Harrington, Rosecroft and Yonkers Raceways this evening offer plenty of genuine good wagering opportunities.

In the opening race on the Harrington program Tuesday evening, give Hit By Lightning (Allan Davis) a chance to make immediate amends and upend her older rivals in this non-winners of four races lifetime class. A three-year-old daughter of Western Terror trained by Wayne Givens, Hit By Lightning finished second as the 4-5 favorite in this group last week from post five after a tough, first over journey. But she is worth backing despite moving out slightly to post seven primarily because she should be able to work out a second over trip.

Several races later in the fourth, the Filly-Mare Open II, a trio of distaffers were garner much of the attention. Keystone Rhythm steps up off a sharp score against the non-winners of $7501 last four class and draws the rail. Jeremes Sweetheart drops out of the Open I after a fourth-place finish following a first over trip, while Tyra, the lone three-year-old filly in the group, tackles older after spending much of the year facing sophomore stakes rivals.

Then two races later in the Open, defending champion Springforth (George Dennis) gets assigned the outside seven slot following her wire-to-wire score as the 2-1 favorite last week. But repeating in the top class here is tough, especially after being assigned the outside, so a pair of distaffers look prime for the upset here.

Embassy Seelster (Davis) finished a good second behind Springforth last week and will start from post five, while the classy, durable Monochromatic (Jim Morand) will leave from post six. She raced third over from post seven last week, but that effort was better than it looked on paper. So there's a good chance Embassy Seelster and Monochromatic, who is certainly no stranger to wins in the top Open here, could complete the exacta this evening.

Rosecroft only races two nights each week through December 13, but its best cards are typically on Tuesday evening rather than Saturday. Such is the case this evening as the Maryland five-eighths mile oval offers a solid 12-race program, of which several of the races appear very competitive.

In the evening's sixth race, a non-winners of $3000 last five class for pacers, look for Game Day (Art Stafford, Jr.) and Caviart Tyler (Jonathan Roberts) to settle the issue in the lane. Game Day has finished third in each of his last three starts and gets the rail this evening, while Caviart Tyler returns to a track where he has thrived in recent years. He was the local scribes' selection as the track's overnight horse of the meet in the fall of 2012.

One race later in the featured Open I, any number of the starters could prevail this evening and join the list of candidates for the track's horse of the meet honors this fall.

Shady Breeze, I Wanna Go Fast, Hi Sir, Fancy Colt, Meg's Boy, Booze Cruzin, Real Impulsive and Beavercreek Artist have all raced well in recent weeks. Shady Breeze has the most talent, but arrives off a brief layoff. I Wanna Go Fast, Real Impulsive and Booze Cruzin were sharp winners over the strip last week and either of them could prevail, while Hi Sir, Fancy Colt and Beavercreek Artist arrive off recent good efforts at Ocean Downs, Harrington and Harrah's Philadelphia, respectively.

Then two races later in the ninth, a non-winners of $5000 last five class for older pacers, look for either Dalhousie Dave, Movie Idol, Rebel Soldier or St Lads He Man to garner top honors. Dalhousie Dave has a right to improve after being soundly beaten as the 4-5 favorite last week. Movie Idol was a good second behind Real Impulsive, while Rebel Soldier and St Lads He Man both figure to benefit from their prior efforts over the oval.

In the eighth race at Yonkers tonight, a non-winners of six races or $60,000 lifetime class, give Mach To The Max (Brian Sears) another chance to prevail. Last week in this class, after missing the week before, Mach To The Max raced first over and finished third as the 5-2 second choice. Expect Sears to have him on or near the lead before the half this evening and since he raced last week he will likely not be short when the real racing begins turning for home.
