Hawthorne hosts two series finals on Wednesday

February 3rd, 2016

Hawthorne Race Track near Chicago will spice up the midweek standardbred action on Wednesday when it offers a pair of series finals and a consolation for one of them.

New Hawthorne racing secretary Pete Hanley has done an admirable job carding races at his latest venue and both the Whizzer White series and the Suburban Downa series will conclude tomorrow after a pair of prelims. The Whizzer White also offers a consolation.

Wednesday's sixth race is the $9000 Whizzer White consolation for pacers that had not won two races or earned $10,000 as of last December 1. Of the horses that failed to earn a spot in the final, Ocaptain Mycaptain, First Frost and Mr Mark Patrick displayed the most ability and those three will vie for favoritism in this event.

One race later in the $16,600 Suburban Downs final for pacers that had not won five races or earned $25,000 as of last Dec. 1, much of the focus will be on Kolt Power and Why Asky Why, who both arrive with three wins in four starts this year.

Kolt Power prevailed last week in 1:54.4 after settling for third one week earlier, while Why Ask Why won his opening round prelim in 1:54.2 before settling for second last week. Kolt Power drew post three while Why Ask Why will start from the outside 10 slot and will have ample work to do.

Then one race later in the $22,200 Whizzer White final, literally any of the 10 starters could find the winner's circle.

Over Friskie (Trace Tetrick) has won both of his prelims in 1:54.3 and 1:55, respectively, and gets the younger Tetrick back in the bike after father Tom Tetrick handled the reins the week before. He also drew post two for the final and looms the favorite to sweep the series.

But several other youthful pacers rate upset possibilities. Party Falls dead-heated with Over Friskie last week and drew well here. Prince Bayard and John Jay also both own wins in the series and could upset here, as could One To Draw To who has been the beaten favorite in each of his two prelims but gets the rail and could surprise at a generous price.
