How Brisnet Prime Power can help handicap the Jan. 6 carryovers at Turfway Park

Ready for some evening betting action at Turfway Park? The racing week gets underway on Wednesday with a pair of carryovers on the horizon.

The Single 6 jackpot (which kicks off in Race 3) currently sits at $15,263, waiting for one lucky bettor to construct a unique winning ticket and claim the full prize. Meanwhile, the Super Hi 5 (available in Race 8) brings a carryover of $4,607 to the mix.

The takeaway? Top-ranked Brisnet Prime Power runners are a good place to start when handicapping Wednesday’s Single 6. Let’s highlight their credentials on a race-by-race basis:

Race 3: $12,500 Claiming (6 furlongs, 7:15 p.m. ET)

Top Prime Power: #7 Lapis Storm (118.2, best by 0.2)

Victorious in four of her last five starts for hot trainer Larry Rivelli, Lapis Storm (7-2) doesn’t hold a large advantage on the Prime Power scale. But what she does bring to the equation is pure front-running speed, which should ensure she works out a clean trip under jockey Gerardo Corrales, a 27% winner at Turfway this winter.

Race 4: $30,000 Claiming (6 1/2 furlongs, 7:44 p.m. ET)

Top Prime Power: #10 Overdressed (120.6, best by 4.0)

Victorious for a $30,000 claiming tag at Churchill Downs during the fall, Overdressed (7-2) will make her Tapeta debut for trainer Mike Maker, who strikes at a 26% rate when transitioning runners from dirt to synthetic. Overdressed has posted competitive Brisnet Speed ratings and has the tactical speed to be prominent from the outset.

Race 5: $5,000 Claiming (1 mile, 8:14 p.m. ET)

Top Prime Power: #2 Miracle Mountain (124.8, best by 6.7)

Miracle Mountain (7-2) ran well for a $7,500 tag on turf at Hawthorne last month, finishing second as the favorite in a large field. The son of Kitten’s Joy has cracked the trifecta in six of his eight starts on synthetic and has been freshened since the middle of November, setting the stage for a big effort. Take note, high-percentage trainer Brittany Vanden Berg is a 56% winner with horses returning from layoffs of 46-90 days.

Race 6: Allowance Optional Claiming (1 mile, 8:44 p.m. ET)

Top Prime Power: #2 Hoistthemainsail (121.9, best by 1.9)

Trainer Kenny McPeek went 4-for-11 (36%) during the holiday meet and can claim another victory with Hoistthemainsail (3-1). The gray 3-year-old threw down a field-best 87 Brisnet Speed rating when finishing second over this class, track, and distance last month. If he gets a slightly quicker pace to work with, Hoistthemainsail will be tough to beat, though eye-catching Turfway maiden winner #4 Hush of a Storm (7-2) also warrants respect as the second-ranked Prime Power representative.

Race 7: $15,000 Claiming (1 mile, 9:14 p.m. ET)

Top Prime Power: #10 Brunella (118.2, best by 0.1)

After facing tougher allowance foes at Indiana Grand and Churchill Downs, Brunella (4-1) is dropping down in class and switching from turf to Tapeta for trainer William Denzik, who wins at a 28% rate in claiming races. But her Prime Power advantage is slim, and second-ranked #7 Lemon Popper (7-2) also offers appeal, considering she’s already won over Tapeta and is likewise descending the class ladder.

Race 8: $5,000 Claiming (1 mile, 9:44 p.m. ET)

Top Prime Power: #7 Fright Night (118.6, best by 0.3)

If you’re playing the Super Hi 5, Fright Night (7-2) looks like a horse you can count on. The son of New Year’s Day has been competing against $10,000 company over the turf and Tapeta courses at Woodbine, losing his last two starts by the combined margin of a length. Descending to the $5,000 level for new trainer Genario Garcia (a 19% winner at Turfway) seems like a recipe for victory.
