How to bet Penn National's $132,446 Super High 5 carryover

March 12th, 2021

Although there are half a dozen Pick 6 jackpots up for grabs on Friday, the biggest carryover of the day isn’t a Pick 6, but a Super High 5.

The 20-cent Hollywood Hi 5 at Penn National has been steadily accumulating and currently stands at $132,446—the only six-figure jackpot on the agenda for Friday. Sweeping the whole pool is difficult (you have to construct a unique winning ticket), but consolation payoffs typically fall in the range of a few hundred dollars—not bad for a 20-cent bet.

Friday’s Hollywood Hi 5 is available in Race 3, a $5,000 claimer for non-winners of three races lifetime. The distance is one mile and 70 yards, and eight fillies and mares have been entered, creating a Super Hi 5 with 6,720 possible outcomes. Playing them all would cost $1,344, but we’ll endeavor to narrow down our tickets and play on a considerably smaller budget.

We’ll start by acknowledging the apparent supremacy of #7 Hayezhee (2-1), the morning line favorite. Although she faltered when competing for a $16,000 tag last time out, two starts back she crushed a $10,000 claimer for non-winners of two races lifetime by 12 1/2 lengths. The 81 Brisnet Speed rating she posted is the highest figure in Friday’s field, stamping Hayezhee as the filly to beat while dropping down to the $5,000 level under hot jockey Jorge Vargas. If we single her on top—which we will—we’ll reduce the number of possible outcomes down to just 840.

Underneath, we’ll emphasize #1 Naturally Quick (3-1), who is 2-for-2 in 2021. After dominating a $7,500 maiden claimer by 5 1/4 lengths, the daughter of Commissioner easily wired a $5,000 event for non-winners of two races lifetime. Naturally Quick was claimed out of the latter victory by trainer Timothy Kreiser, who wins at a 32% rate with horses making their first start after a claim. Naturally Quick isn’t the fastest filly in terms of Brisnet Speed ratings, but her tactical speed is an asset, and high-percentage jockey Edwin Gonzalez (a 39% winner when teaming up with Kreiser) retains the mount.

#2 Gizmo’s Princess (5-1), #4 Cals My Pal (6-1), and #5 Arctica (8-1) are other logical contenders to finish in the top five. But this race is very competitive from top to bottom, so we’ll hit the “ALL” button for two slots and hope to catch a longshot (or two) on the bottom of our tickets.
