How to bet the Gulfstream Park stakes on Feb. 13

A pair of Grade 3 tilts, one on the dirt and another on the lawn, will highlight a solid Saturday card at Gulfstream Park. Each of the co-features boasts a formidable favorite that will be tough to upend, so I will focus on trifecta wagers where I believe that the value lies.

Here is my analysis:

Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint S. (G3)

A field of seven will dash five panels on the green in the $100,000 fray. Multiple Grade 2 victor #6 Leinster, who was a close third in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) in his latest showing, looks impossible to defeat with anything resembling his best. Rusty Arnold pupil is consistently excellent, and he is training swiftly in advance of this race, too.

#2 High Crime is the inside speed of the field for Darrin Miller, and pace in turf sprints on the course is especially dangerous. Violence five-year-old has some quality to him, and he would be one to consider for an upset if there is moisture in the ground. Nonetheless, he will likely lead the field in the lane and hang on for the runner-up spot.

Herman Wilensky’s #3 Harry’s Ontheloose exits a tough heat when an even fourth, and the gray could be peaking in his third assignment off the layoff. Junior Alvarado has the call atop the exotics contender.

Gulfstream Park Sprint S. (G3)

Seven will race six furlongs on the dirt in a competitive race, and my main focus will be on a trio of contenders in this event, as well. Two-time Grade 3 victor #5 Mischevious Alex is the one to beat off the strength of his top sophomore performances, as well as his powerful allowance tally on the course off the shelf. The Into Mischief colt retains the services of Irad Ortiz and looms large.

#1 Edgemont Road has been in fine form since July and rates an upset chance in his second for Kenneally. Speightstown gelding overcame an awkward start to beat allowance runners at Tampa in his seasonal debut, and the chestnut has the running style to have success on this surface in his local bow. Jose Ortiz riding adds to the appeal.

#7 Frosted Grace is far from a win machine, but the bay is consistent and often runs well at Gulfstream. Ritvo pupil has improved since adding blinkers two prior, and the son of Mark Valeski figures to get a hot early pace to rally into late with Saez in the stirrups.
