How To Win Big in the Pick 6 When Your Strongest Opinion Is Not Having One

September 4th, 2015

When your strongest opinion is that you don’t have a strong opinion on a particular race, watching a longshot go gate-to-wire to scoop the entire Pick 6 pool might not make you feel like a smart handicapper, but it’s a great way to feel like a smart bettor.

That’s what happened to the Virginia-based TwinSpires.com player on Thursday, September 3, who won $737,942 playing the Pick 6 at Saratoga on a $672 ticket.

The player, who did not want to be identified, singled #10 Ian Smith in leg 2 (race 6) and #4 Clearly Now in leg 4 (race 8). They were the shortest priced winners of the sequence, paying $5.20 and $5.50, respectively.

They were not, however, the shortest prices in the sequence. Bella Kateri was 7-to-5 in leg 5 (race 9), and Weather Girl was 3-to-2 in leg 6 (race 10).

The winning ticket included both those horses but went deeper in each leg, catching Hot Squeeze at 5.6-to-1 in leg 5 (race 9) and the rainmaker Saratoga Smoke in leg 6 (race 10), who went gate-to-wire under Eric Cancel and paid $37 to win as the longest-priced winner in the sequence.

“It was the most wide-open race being for New York breds, and I Just couldn’t narrow it down,” the winning player said of going deepest in the final leg. “I’ve just seen too many improbable grass horses go wire tow ire at Saratoga not to use any horse who can do that. It’s like one horse goes to the lead then everyone pulls back. I looked for anyone who could make the lead, so I included [Saratoga Smoke].”

The winning player said he enjoys chasing carryovers and plans to be active on Monday when Del Mar, Gulfstream, and Saratoga will all have must-win Pick 6 pools (the TwinSpires.com Players’ Pool will be playing the Gulfstream and Saratoga Pick 6s).
