I’m a Chatterbox among five distaffers entered in Spinster; Bourbon draws oversubscribed 16

Five fillies and mares will line up in Sunday’s $500,000 Spinster Stakes (G1) for a guaranteed berth to the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) while an overflow field of 16 has been entered in the $250,000 Bourbon Stakes (G3) for a shot at the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1).

Both the Spinster and Bourbon take place Sunday on Keeneland’s FallStars opening weekend and are part of the Breeders’ Cup “Win & You’re In” Challenge.

The 1 1/8-mile Spinster features a Distaff alumnus in the form of I’m a Chatterbox. The Larry Jones pupil wrapped up her Grade 1-winning sophomore campaign with an eighth-place run in the Distaff, though she did encounter traffic in the nine-furlong affair.

The chestnut daughter of Munnings has captured the Delaware Handicap (G1) this year and ran a close fourth last out in the Personal Ensign Stakes (G1) under Florent Geroux, who retains the mount for Sunday’s contest.

Paid Up Subscriber finished behind I’m a Chatterbox in both the Delaware ‘Cap and Personal Ensign, running second and fifth, respectively. The Al Stall Jr.-trained four-year-old captured the Fleur de Lis Handicap (G2) earlier this season at Churchill Downs and gets a jockey switch to Jose Ortiz for the Spinster.

Engaginglee was last seen taking the September 17 Locust Grove Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs by a head for trainer Dale Romans. That was the Fusaichi Pegasus mare’s first stakes win and came with returning jockey Luis Saez in the irons.

Genre has gone 11-5-4-0 in her career thus far, including a pair of wins in her last two comprised of the Molly Pitcher Stakes (G3) and Lady Jacqueline Stakes. The Todd Pletcher charge will have Javier Castellano holding the reins for the first time in the Spinster.

Miss Pink Diva, second to Engaginglee in the Locust Grove and fourth to Genre in the Lady Jacqueline in her last two, rounds out the field under Shaun Bridgmohan for William Bradley.

One race before the Spinster, juveniles will test themselves in the 1 1/16-mile Bourbon on Keeneland’s turf.

All Right, Royal By Nature and Prados Way are the only stakes winners in the group.

All Right broke his maiden by a neck in the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Stakes, Royal By Nature is unbeaten in two starts including the Sunday Silence Stakes, and Prados Way prevailed in the Manzano Stakes on the main track at Albuquerque Downs.

Keep Quiet and Bird’s Eye View are both exiting the With Anticipation Stakes (G2) at Saratoga on August 31. The former finished second while the latter rallied to fill the third spot.

Sunday Silence runner-up Hembee, Kentucky Downs Juvenile third- and sixth-placers Hot Dad and Ancient Warfare, and Cold Snack Thirty, unplaced in two stakes tries thus far, are the only other runners with prior stakes experience in the field.

Ticonderoga romped in his second start to break his maiden by 4 1/4 lengths on September 10 at Belmont Park. It’s Your Nickel also needed two tries, but his first win came in his initial turf start at Saratoga in late August. He’ll be getting Lasix added in the Bourbon. Heaven is Waiting scored a neck decision in his debut at Belmont in mid-September.

Unbridled Eagle took four tries to break his maiden, finally getting the job done on Saratoga’s main track, while Artful Union needed three races to get his first win, which came at Kentucky Downs.

Real Creel and Sonic Boom are both on the also-eligible list and need defections to draw into the main body of the field.
