Is Untapable Unstoppable?

July 27th, 2014

Our resident racing expert thinks Untapable is unstoppable today... do you disagree?

How does Molly Jo Rosen see the Haskell field?

Monmouth Park Race 12 | 5:44 pm ET on NBC G1 Haskell Invitational for 3yo going 1-1/8 mi.

1-Encryption: they'll have to catch him over his home track 2-Bayern: won by a long way over 7f last time out but now has to prove he can win over a mile 3-Albano: won a prep by daylight off a freshening before getting a month+ again 4-Irish You Well: looking for 3rd straight after winning the prep & gets jock upgrade 5-Just Call Kenny: yet to be worse than second in short career 6-Social Inclusion: the ability is there when he gets the trip 7-Untapable: has beaten all the girls (by daylight) this year but now goes head-to-head against the boys. 8-Wildcat Red: line-through the Derby and he's done very little wrong 9-Medal Count: likely a multiple graded stakes winner if he'd gotten a few cleaner trips

In 2009, I stood along the rail across from the wire as Rachel Alexandra made her move and overpowered Munnings to take command in the Haskell. Will we see Untapable run a similar performance today? I don't know, but a part of me really hopes so. Not just because she's a filly (though don't get me wrong: I like any time a girls beats the boys). It's because I love to see a horse reach their ultimate potential.

So what about the Haskell? How does this race play out?

I think Bayern, Social Inclusion, Wildcat Red & Encryption all go out and cook each other on the front end, which sets up for Untapable and Medal Count to make their runs off the turn. It wouldn't surprise me if Albano gets involved at the half-mile pole, but I just don't think he - or 'Irish or 'Kenny - are on the same level as the others.

So who wins? I think the filly does it, but it's either going to be by a nose or the length of the stretch. For the Unstoppable Untapable promotion, I would definitely use Medal Count and Social Inclusion. I'd like to like Bayern because Baffert is so good shipping east, but I've long maintained that he's your Dirt Mile winner given that his only bad efforts have been when he's tried past a mile.

Picks: 7 - 9 - 6 - 2

P.S.: Wayne Catalano, who trains Irish You Well, is currently in the hospital being treated for pneumonia. Wayne is an amazing person, as well as a great trainer. So let's all send positive vibes for a speedy recovery!
