Kentucky Derby Context: Iron Honor

An early/presser, Iron Honor captured his first two starts, displaying good speed, breaking his maiden in mid-December and winning the Gotham (G3) 2 1/2 months later. The bay colt experienced a rough trip stretching to two turns in the Wood Memorial (G2), getting bumped around during the early stages, and didn’t fire his best shot, weakening to seventh. Despite his inexperience, Iron Honor will look to rebound with a better showing in the Kentucky Derby (G1), and his tactical ability offers appeal in a field packed with off-the-pace runners.
OWNER: St. Elias Stable (Vinnie Viola), William H. Lawrence, and Glassman Racing (Cathi Glassman) campaign Iron Honor. Viola co-owned 2017 Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming and has been involved in other Kentucky Derby partnerships, including Sandman, seventh in last year’s Run for the Roses. He also has Fulleffort and Golden Tempo, who earned Kentucky Derby berths this year. Lawrence will make his second appearance, co-owning Practical Joke, fifth in the 2017 Kentucky Derby. Glassman will have her first starter.
TRAINER: Since making his first Kentucky Derby appearance in 2013, Chad Brown has saddled Good Magic (2018) and Sierra Leone (2024) to runner-up finishes and Zandon (2022) to a third, recording an overall 9-0-2-1 record. He trained Klaravich Stables’ Preakness winners, Cloud Computing (2016) and Early Voting (2022), and is a five-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer. A native of upstate New York, Brown served as an assistant to Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel before starting his own stable in late 2007. He will also be represented by Emerging Market in the Kentucky Derby.
JOCKEY: TBD

BREEDER: Bred in Kentucky by Mike and Pat Freeny, Iron Honor passed through the sales ring twice, bringing $230,000 as a weanling before being resold for $475,000 as a yearling at the 2024 Keeneland September sale. He will be the first Kentucky Derby runner bred by the Freenys.
SIRE: Iron Honor is from the sixth crop of 2016 Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist, a son of Uncle Mo. Responsible for multiple champions, Nyquist’s best result in a Triple Crown race so far came last year, with Gosger finishing second in the Preakness.
DAM: Iron Honor is the first foal to race out of Orencia, a daughter of champion older male Blame, who showed an affinity for Churchill Downs, winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), Stephen Foster (G1), and Clark (G2) under the Twin Spires. As a broodmare sire, Blame is still trying to make a serious impact on the Triple Crown. He was represented by champion two-year-old male and Belmont S. runner-up Forte, who was installed as the morning line favorite for the 2023 Kentucky Derby but forced to scratch due to a foot issue.
