2026 Kentucky Derby: How far did the top finishers run?

May 6th, 2026

The 2026 Kentucky Derby (G1) at Churchill Downs produced a thrilling finish. The lead changed hands multiple times in the final furlong, with Golden Tempo ultimately charging home triumphant on the far outside.

Watching the overhead replay captured by NBC Sports makes clear just how wide Golden Tempo rallied. At one point, he was racing almost as close to the outside rail as the inside rail.

Just how much extra ground did Golden Tempo cover by racing wide? And did any of the other Kentucky Derby starters run farther? Thanks to the GPS tracking data published on Equibase.com, we can answer these questions.

How far did Golden Tempo run in the Kentucky Derby?

The distance of the Kentucky Derby is 1 1/4 miles. Measured in feet, that’s 6,600 feet.

Due to ground loss around the turns of the Kentucky Derby, Golden Tempo ran 6,625 feet. Renegade, who finished second by a neck, covered 6,619 feet. One length equals approximately eight feet, so Golden Tempo ran about three-quarters of a length farther than Renegade. If they’d covered the same amount of ground, Golden Tempo would have theoretically prevailed by one length instead of a neck.

Did any other Kentucky Derby horses run farther than Golden Tempo?

It should be noted, however, that Golden Tempo only shifted to the extreme outside in the homestretch, when ground loss was no longer a concern. He was able to save ground around the first turn while trailing the field, and he avoided racing overly wide around the far turn as well.

As a result, many Kentucky Derby horses ran farther than Golden Tempo on the first Saturday in May.

First and foremost, third-place finisher Ocelli. Entering as a 0-for-6 maiden disregarded at 70-1 odds, he was beaten only one length at the finish line after running 6,644 feet—over 2 1/4 lengths farther than Golden Tempo. He made an earlier move than Golden Tempo and raced much wider around the far turn, which—by the GPS numbers—may have cost him victory.

Chief Wallabee (6,636 feet), Danon Bourbon (6,637 feet), Incredibolt (6,628 feet), Commandment (6,662 feet), Wonder Dean (6,659 feet), and So Happy (6,667 feet) finished fourth through ninth and ran farther than Golden Tempo by margins ranging from less than half a length to 5 1/4 lengths. However, all were beaten by larger margins than the ground they lost compared to Golden Tempo.

Which horse ran the farthest in the 2026 Kentucky Derby?

Robusta, who started widest of all from post 18, covered 6,678 feet, more than any other horse in the field. He ran over 6 1/2 lengths farther than Golden Tempo, but finished in 14th place by 17 1/2 lengths, so ground loss alone doesn’t explain his defeat.

Which horses saved the most ground in the 2026 Kentucky Derby?

The prize for saving the most ground goes to Intrepido, who covered only 6,613 feet while finishing 16th. Albus did almost as well at saving ground, running 6,615 feet while finishing 15th.

Interestingly, Renegade and Golden Tempo are third and fourth on the list of top ground-savers. Even though their outside rallies down the Churchill Downs homestretch gave the impression they must have lost tons of ground around the turns, that wasn’t the case; Golden Tempo saved more ground than 14 of his 17 rivals.

Takeaways

Golden Tempo ran a strong race to win the 2026 Kentucky Derby. When factoring ground loss, his victory over Renegade is more decisive than it first appears.

However, when ground loss is considered, third-place finisher Occeli ran the best race of all. If he had saved as much ground as Golden Tempo, Occeli might have prevailed by 1 1/4 lengths in the Kentucky Derby, becoming the first maiden to win the Run for the Roses since 1933.
