2026 Kentucky Derby: Which horses are bred to handle mud?

As of Wednesday, the weather forecast for Kentucky Derby (G1) day at Churchill Downs looks dry. But you never know when a rainstorm might pop up and change the picture.
If we wind up with a wet track (sloppy, muddy, etc.) for the eighth time since 2009, which horses will handle the conditions? Which will struggle over rain-soaked footing? It’s a tough question, because the vast majority of the 2026 Kentucky Derby entrants have competed exclusively over fast (dry) tracks.
The good news is that Brisnet Ultimate Past Performances can help us predict which horses might perform best over a wet track.
Brisnet Ultimate Past Performances lists the sire of each Kentucky Derby contender and the winning percentage of the sire’s progeny when racing over wet tracks. Based on these metrics, here’s how the 2026 Kentucky Derby horses stack up:
2026 Kentucky Derby contenders, ranked by the winning percentage of their sire’s progeny when racing over wet tracks:
1. Danon Bourbon (27%)
2. Pavlovian (23%)
3. Emerging Market (20%)
3. Further Ado (20%)
3. Six Speed (20%)
6. Fulleffort (19%)
6. Litmus Test (19%)
8. Commandment (18%)
8. Golden Tempo (18%)
8. Potente (18%)
8. Renegade (18%)
12. So Happy (17%)
13. Chief Wallabee (16%)

15. The Puma (15%)
20. Albus (14%)
20. Intrepido (14%)
22. Ocelli (12%)
23. Wonder Dean (8%)
Danon Bourbon tops the chart. The undefeated Japanese star is a son of Maxfield, who sires 27% winners over wet tracks. While Maxfield himself never raced over a wet track, he did flaunt his talent repeatedly at Churchill Downs, going 5-for-5 over the Kentucky Derby’s host track.
Pavlovian, Emerging Market, Further Ado, and Six Speed also rank highly on the chart. They’re all sons of stallions who sire 20% or more winners over wet tracks.
Bettors can also analyze dam sire stats. Brisnet Ultimate Past Performances include the winning percentage of wet-track starters sired by the dam sire of each horse. Here’s how this year’s Kentucky Derby contenders rank:
2026 Kentucky Derby contenders, ranked by the winning percentage of their dam sire’s progeny when racing over wet tracks:
1. Great White (18%)
1. Renegade (18%)
1. Robusta (18%)
4. Albus (17%)
4. Danon Bourbon (17%)
4. Fulleffort (17%)
4. Golden Tempo (17%)
4. Incredibolt (17%)
4. Potente (17%)
4. So Happy (17%)
11. Chief Wallabee (16%)
11. Commandment (16%)
11. Litmus Test (16%)
11. Pavlovian (16%)
11. Six Speed (16%)
16. Corona de Oro (15%)
16. Ocelli (15%)
18. Further Ado (14%)
18. Intrepido (14%)
20. Emerging Market (12%)
21. Right to Party (11%)
21. The Puma (11%)
23. Wonder Dean (7%)
Danon Bourbon still ranks in the top four, but the top spot is a three-way tie between Great White, Kentucky Derby favorite Renegade, and Robusta. Their dam sires all sire 18% winners over wet tracks—a respectable, but not eye-catching percentage.

Finally, we’ll combine the wet-track winning percentages of the sires and dam sires into single numbers and rank the Kentucky Derby contenders accordingly:
2026 Kentucky Derby contenders, ranked by combining the winning percentages of their sire’s progeny and dam’s sire’s progeny into a single number:
1. Danon Bourbon (44)
2. Pavlovian (39)
3. Fulleffort (36)
3. Renegade (36)
3. Six Speed (36)
6. Golden Tempo (35)
6. Litmus Test (35)
6. Potente (35)
9. Commandment (34)
9. Further Ado (34)
9. So Happy (34)
12. Great White (33)
12. Robusta (33)
14. Chief Wallabee (32)
14. Emerging Market (32)
14. Incredibolt (32)
17. Albus (31)
18. Corona de Oro (30)
19. Intrepido (28)
20. Ocelli (27)
20. Right to Party (27)
22. The Puma (26)
23. Wonder Dean (15)
Based on the wet-track winning percentages of both sires and dam sires, Danon Bourbon figures to excel if rain strikes on the first Saturday in May. That’s in keeping with his on-track accomplishments; he’s gone 2-for-2 competing over muddy tracks in Japan.
Pavlovian, Fulleffort, Renegade, and Six Speed also rank highly. Keep in mind, Renegade is a son of Into Mischief, whose son Sovereignty won the 2025 Kentucky Derby over a sloppy track.
Fulleffort’s top-three ranking is encouraging since he’s competed exclusively on turf and Tapeta so far. If Churchill Downs comes up sloppy for the Kentucky Derby, Fulleffort’s chances of successfully handling the switch to dirt may improve.
