Fastest Kentucky Derby Times: What History Tells Us

The Kentucky Derby (G1) adopted its current 1 1/4-mile distance in 1896. In the ensuing decades, the fastest and average winning times have decreased significantly.
The average winning time of the Kentucky Derby decreased from 2:10.31 in the late 1890s to a low of 2:01.64 in the 1960s. The fastest winning time likewise dropped sharply, from 2:07.75 in 1896 down to 1:59.40 in 1973.
However, the average winning time by decade has largely plateaued since the 1950s, varying by only 1.45 seconds from 2:01.64 to 2:03.09. Meanwhile, the fastest winning time has gone unbeaten for over half a century.
Slow times during the early years
The first 21 editions of the Kentucky Derby took place over 1 1/2 miles. The first edition over 1 1/4 miles saw Ben Brush clock 2:07.75 on a track labeled dusty. By the end of the decade, the average winning time for 1 1/4 miles was 2:10.31.
| Year | Winner | Time |
| 1896 | Ben Brush | 2:07.75 |
| 1897 | Typhoon II | 2:12.50 |
| 1898 | Plaudit | 2:09.00 |
| 1899 | Manuel | 2:12.00 |
| 1896-99 | Average | 2:10.31 |
Note: All times recorded in quarters or fifths of seconds have been converted to their equivalents in hundredths.
The first decade of the 20th century produced slightly quicker times. While Stone Street ran the slowest 1 1/4-mile Derby of all (clocking 2:15.20 over a heavy track), Lieut. Gibson lowered the Derby record to 2:06.25, and the average winning time for the decade came in at 2:09.58.

Three records set in the 1910s
The caliber of Kentucky Derby winners rose sharply in the 1910s, with future Hall of Fame inductees Old Rosebud, Regret, Exterminator, and Sir Barton winning the Roses. Partly as a result, the average winning time dropped to 2:06.36.
The Derby speed record fell three times in the 1910s, with Meridian clocking 2:05.00, Donerail going in 2:04.80, and Old Rosebud reaching the wire in 2:03.40.

Triple Crown winners pick up the pace
The 1930s and 1940s saw seven horses sweep the elusive Triple Crown: Gallant Fox, Omaha, War Admiral, Whirlaway, Count Fleet, Assault, and Citation. This golden age of racing saw many top-notch horses win the Kentucky Derby, and the average winning time continued to drop.

The 1950s set a new standard of excellence
In the 1940s, five Kentucky Derby winners completed the race in 2:05.00 or slower. In the 1950s, only one winner (Tim Tam, over a muddy track) ran as slow as 2:05.00, and nine of them won in 2:03.40 or faster.
No speed records were set during the 1950s, but generally fast times across the board lowered the average winning time to 2:02.54, breaking the previous standard set in the 1930s by two seconds.

This trio of sub-2:01 clockings helped lower the Derby’s average winning time for the 1960s to 2:01.64, which remains the fastest single-decade average in history.

Fast times continue in the present day
Overall, winning times in the Kentucky Derby haven’t changed much in the last 75 years, as evidenced by the minimal 1.45-second variance in average winning times by decade since the 1950s.
Average winning times in the Kentucky Derby, by decade

The Kentucky Derby produced the majority of its fastest winning times between 1962 and 1985, when five of the seven sub-2:01 clockings were recorded, including Secretariat’s still-standing record of 1:59.40.
However, nine of the 19 fastest Kentucky Derbys have been contested since 2000, ranging from Monarchos’ 1:59.97 to Mage’s 2:01.57, showing it’s still possible for Derby winners to record fast times.
