Golden Tempo gives DeVaux historic win in Kentucky Derby result

May 2nd, 2026

Racing history was made at Churchill Downs on Saturday when Golden Tempo won with a last-to-first rally for trainer Cherie DeVaux, who became the first female to train a winner of the Kentucky Derby (G1).

Sent off at 23-1 under Jose Ortiz, Golden Tempo won by a neck over Renegade, who nearly overcame a horrendous trip from post 1. It was three-quarters of a length back to Ocelli, a maiden who drew in off the also-eligible list.

The order of finish was rounded out by Chief Wallabee, Danon Bourbon, Incredibolt, Commandment, Wonder Dean, So Happy, Emerging Market, 5-1 favorite Further Ado, Potente, Six Speed, Robusta, Albus, Intrepido, Litmus Test, and Pavlovian.

Golden Tempo sported the historic black and cherry red cap silks of the Phipps Stable, which bred and co-owns Golden Tempo with St Elias Stable. The Phipps Stable also co-owned 2013 Kentucky Derby winner Orb, though he wore the red and white silks of co-owner Stuart Janney. Golden Tempo gave his sire, two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, his first registered Kentucky Derby winner.

Golden Tempo, who previously won the Lecomte (G3) and finished third in the Risen Star (G2) and Louisiana Derby (G2), all at Fair Grounds, covered 1 1/4 miles over a fast track in 2:02.27.

Golden Tempo paid $48.24, $19.14, and $11.90. Renegade paid $7.14 and $5.46. Ocelli returned $36.34 to show.

The $2 exacta paid $278.86, the 50-cent trifecta returned $5,625.39, and the $1 superfecta paid $94,489.95.
