Kentucky Derby Context: Danon Bourbon

A convincing winner in all three starts, Danon Bourbon will try to give Japan its first Kentucky Derby (G1) win. The dark bay colt will enter off a smashing effort in the final Japanese qualifier, the Fukuryu S., in late March, closely tracking the pace before drawing off to a 3 1/2-length decision, and Danon Bourbon appears distance-oriented, making all three starts at routes, including a romping win at 1 3/16 miles in his 2026 opener. He lacks the experience and reputation of Japanese-based Forever Young, who was unbeaten from five starts before finishing third by a pair of noses in the 2024 Kentucky Derby, and the Kentucky Derby will be Danon Bourbon’s first start on a left-handed track. But if the up-and-comer to his new environment, Danon Bourbon, possesses the tractability to make his own trip in the Kentucky Derby.
OWNER: Mashahiro Noda races under the Danox Co. banner and uses the “Danon” prefix to name his horses. Danon Bourbon will be his first Kentucky Derby starter.
TRAINER: Manabu Ikezoe tutored under Aidan O’Brien and worked for his father, retired trainer Kaneo Ikezoe, until opening his own stable in 2015. Ikezoe is set to make his Kentucky Derby debut.
JOCKEY: Atsuya Nishimura, winner of 18 graded stakes in Japan so far, will make his first Kentucky Derby appearance aboard Danon Bourbon.
BREEDER: Blue Heaven Farm (Dr. Bonnie Baskin and Adam Corndorf) will be represented by their first Kentucky Derby starter as breeder. Kentucky-bred Danon Bourbon sold for $450,000 as a yearling at the 2023 Keeneland September sale.
SIRE: Danon Bourbon is from the first crop of Maxfield, an earner of more than $2 million who counted the Clark (G1), Stephen Foster (G2), Alysheba (G2), and Matt Winn (G3) at Churchill Downs among his seven stakes wins. Maxfield is the son of 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense.
DAM: Danon Bourbon is the most successful of six foals from the Tapit mare Wild Ridge, a half-sister to juvenile Grade 2 winner Dubuhynell, who was under consideration for the 2023 Kentucky Derby. Ninth in the 2004 Kentucky Derby, leading sire Tapit is best known for siring four Belmont (G1) winners. As a broodmare sire, Tapit is responsible for the 2023 Belmont winner and champion three-year-old male Arcangelo and 2025 Preakness (G1) runner-up Gosger (2025).
