Kentucky Derby Context: Wonder Dean

Based in Japan, Wonder Dean stepped up at the right time while stretching to 1 3/16 miles in the UAE Derby (G2) in late March, overhauling the pacesetter in the stretch and driving to a 2 1/2-length decision, and the dark bay colt will try to give Japan its first Kentucky Derby win. The stalker broke his maiden last September, and while he dropped his next three engagements, Wonder Dean performed respectably against well-regarded competition, recording a pair of seconds and a fourth in the one-mile Saudi Derby (G3). The lone internationally bred horse in the 2026 Kentucky Derby field (Danon Bourbon and Six Speed bred in Kentucky before being sent overseas), Wonder Dean avoided a couple of top contenders in the UAE Derby who didn’t ship due to the wartime conditions, and Forever Young is the only UAE Derby alumnus to factor in the Kentucky Derby, finishing a close third in 2024. Wonder Dean faces a class check, but he owns the foundation to make a serious Kentucky Derby bid and will enter on the upswing.
OWNER: Wonder Dean races under the colors of owner/breeder Yoshinari Yamamoto, who will be represented by his first Kentucky Derby runner.
TRAINER: Daisuke Takayanagi, who spent time at Churchill Downs in 2017 studying U.S. racing, will send his second starter to the Kentucky Derby. He trained T O Password, who outperformed expectations when finishing fifth in the 2024 Kentucky Derby at 48-1 odds in his third lifetime start.
JOCKEY: Wonder Dean will add the services of Ryusei Sakai, who will make his second Kentucky Derby appearance after finishing third aboard Forever Young.
The fifth straight Japanese-trained winner of the UAE Derby (G2), and sixth overall, Wonder Dean will try to score an historic breakthrough in the Kentucky Derby (G1) that has eluded his compatriots so far. 🏆🏇🇯🇵
