Kentucky Derby pedigree profile: Iron Honor

A determined charge down the Aqueduct homestretch carried Iron Honor to a one-length victory in the Gotham (G3) on the Road to the Kentucky Derby.
Iron Honor needed almost every yard of the Gotham’s one-mile distance to exert his superiority over runner-up Crown the Buckeye. One mile may be shorter than Iron Honor wants to run; his pedigree suggests the 1 1/4-mile distance of the Kentucky Derby (G1) could prove more suitable.
It was a stretch battle in the Gotham and IRON HONOR had no problem stretching out to a mile, picking up 50 points towards the @kentuckyderby! 🌹@jockeyfranco was aboard the 3YO colt and Chad Brown trains. pic.twitter.com/38HBbR0pdl

After all, Iron Honor is a son of Nyquist, the 2016 Kentucky Derby winner. Nyquist was an early-maturing and versatile racehorse who won Grade 1 races over seven furlongs, 1 1/16 miles, 1 1/8 miles, and 1 1/4 miles. Even though he excelled in sprints and short routes as a juvenile, at age three he carried his speed with aplomb over the Kentucky Derby’s testing distance.
At stud, Nyquist has sired many accomplished milers, including Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) conqueror Nysos, Summer (G1) winners Gretzky the Great and Argos, Shoemaker Mile (G1) hero Johannes, and B. Wayne Hugher Beholder Mile (G1) winner Cavalieri. Others have excelled over distances slightly shorter or longer than one mile, such as the champion two-year-old fillies Immersive and Vequist, winners of the seven-furlong Spinaway (G1) and 1 1/16-mile Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1).
But pure sprinters have been uncommon among Nyquist’s top progeny. The vast majority of his graded stakes winners have scored their signature wins racing at least one mile, and some have excelled racing considerably farther. Randomized, for example, won the 1 1/4-mile Alabama (G1). Slow Down Andy took the 1 1/8-mile Awesome Again (G1). Velocity prevailed in the 1 1/8-mile Del Mar Oaks (G2), and Gosger finished a close second in the 1 3/16-mile Preakness (G1).
Nyquist’s stud record is similar to that of his own sire, Uncle Mo. While Uncle Mo has proven capable of siring grass horses and sprinters—including Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1) hero Golden Pal, who blended those capabilities—he’s best known for his dirt route racers. In addition to Nyquist, Uncle Mo has sired 1 1/2-mile Belmont (G1) winner Mo Donegal, 1 1/4-mile Pacific Classic (G1) winner Arabian Knight, and 1 1/8-mile Stephen Foster (G1) winner Kingsbarns, to name a select few.
This stamina is encouraging, and there’s more to be found in the bottom half of Iron Honor’s pedigree.

Iron Honor is the first starter produced by Orencia, who scored two wins over very different conditions. She broke her maiden in a 6 1/2-furlong $50,000 maiden claimer on dirt at Churchill Downs, then came back a month later to trounce a $50,000 starter allowance racing one mile over the Gulfstream Park grass.
Orencia’s multi-surface versatility may have been inherited from her sire, Blame. The champion older male of 2010 is best remembered for his exceptional dirt prowess, which was on display when he won the 1 1/4-mile Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1), 1 1/8-mile Whitney H. (G1), and 1 1/8-mile Stephen Foster H. (G1). But he also nabbed the 1 1/8-mile Fayette (G2) over Keeneland’s old synthetic Polytrack course.
At stud, Blame has sired talented dirt and turf runners alike. On dirt, he’s responsible for 1 1/8-mile Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) winner Wet Paint, seven-furlong Ballerina (G1) heroine Marley’s Freedom, 1 1/8-mile Arkansas Derby (G1) winner Nadal, and 1 1/8-mile Santa Margarita (G1) conqueror Fault.
But Fault also won a couple of graded stakes on turf, including the one-mile Buena Vista (G2), and she’s far from the only accomplished grass runner Blame has sired. Sibayan won the Preis von Europa (G1) in Germany, racing 2,400 meters (about 1 1/2 miles). Senga prevailed in the Prix de Diane (G1) over 2,100 meters (about 1 5/16 miles) in France. Abscond nabbed the one-mile Natalma (G1), and March finished second in the 1 1/8-mile Hollywood Derby (G1) after previously winning the seven-furlong Woody Stephens (G2) on dirt.
Returning to Orencia, her dam is the unraced mare Curry Cat, who was in turn produced by Pratella. Pratella was a capable grass racer who scored her biggest win in the 1 1/8-mile Cardinal H. (G3). As a broodmare, she foaled Angliana, winner of the 1 1/16-mile Aqueduct H. and a top-three finisher in the 1 1/2-mile Brooklyn H. (G2), 1 1/8-mile Excelsior H. (G3), and 1 1/4-mile Red Smith H. (G3), all on dirt.
With this strong pedigree backing him up, there’s a good chance Iron Honor will relish racing 1 1/4 miles on the first Saturday in May.
