Kentucky Derby pedigree profile: Jas

There are no certainties in horse racing, but it seems safe to assume Jas has the stamina to stay 1 1/4 miles in the 2027 Kentucky Derby (G1).
Some horses are bred to be sprinters. Others are cut out for success in miles and short routes. Jas is bred top and bottom to excel over classic and perhaps even marathon distances, so the fact that he prevailed over a relatively short 1 1/16-mile journey in the Street Sense (G3)—an early Road to the Kentucky Derby qualifier at Churchill Downs—is eye-catching.
Jas is a son of 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify, who demonstrated abundant talent and class over distances up to 1 1/2 miles. At stud, Justify has developed into a terrific source of stamina. His progeny have compiled a lofty average winning distance of 7.9 furlongs—higher than renowned U.S. classic sires like Curlin and Tapit—and he’s already sired a bevy of Grade 1 winners over route distances. Examples include:
- City of Troy, conqueror of the 1 1/2-mile Derby (G1), 1 5/16-mile Juddmonte International (G1), and 1 1/4-mile Eclipse (G1).
- Scandinavia, an elite stayer with wins in the 2 1/2-mile Gold Cup (G1) at Royal Ascot, two-mile Goodwood Cup (G1), 1 13/16-mile St. Leger (G1), and 1 3/4-mile Irish St. Leger (G1) on his record.
- Aspen Grove, winner of the 1 1/4-mile Belmont Oaks (G1).
- Opera Singer, heroine of the 1 1/4-mile Nassau (G1).
- Stellify, a two-time winner of the 1 5/16-mile Kentucky Downs Ladies Marathon (G3).
Importantly, Justify isn’t purely a source of stamina. He can also sire speedier sorts, which is important since a blend of speed and stamina is often necessary to win the Kentucky Derby. City of Troy was quick enough to win the seven-furlong Dewhurst (G1) as a juvenile. Opera Singer nabbed a win in the one-mile Prix Marcel Boussac (G1). Plus, Justify has also sired:
- Just F Y I, winner of the 1 1/16-mile Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) and one-mile Frizette (G1).
- Hard to Justify, winner of the one-mile Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1).
- Haffner, recently victorious in the one-mile Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1).
- Ramatuelle, triumphant in the Prix de la Foret (G1) over 1,400 meters (about seven furlongs).
- Arabian Lion, conqueror of the seven-furlong Woody Stephens (G1).
- Ruling Court, winner of the historic one-mile 2000 Guineas (G1).
Pure sprinters are uncommon among Justify’s best progeny, but miler speed pops up with regularity, which is nice for Jas since the bottom half of his pedigree brings another strong dose of stamina.

The dam of Jas is Flag Day, an unraced daughter of Giant’s Causeway out of the Street Sense mare Sense to Compete. Prior to foaling Jas, Flag Day produced Hall of Fame, a capable route racer best known for winning the 1 1/16-mile Mineshaft (G3).
Giant’s Causeway was a top-tier racehorse who won half a dozen Group 1 races over distances from seven furlongs to 1 5/16 miles. He competed primarily on turf, but also finished second by a neck in the 1 1/4-mile Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) on dirt.
Giant’s Causeway proved successful at stud, topping the North American sire rankings three times. His progeny compiled an average winning distance of 8.0 furlongs and primarily excelled as route racers, with the best including 2019 Horse of the Year and 1 1/2-mile Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1) winner Bricks and Mortar.
One particularly long-winded son of Giant’s Causeway, Man of Iron, won the short-lived Breeders’ Cup Marathon over 1 3/4 miles.
Sense to Compete, the dam of Flag Day, showed route racing ability, winning a 1 1/16-mile allowance and finishing second in the 1 1/8-mile Twin Lights S. Her best foal, Street Ready, recorded top-three finishes in the 1 1/8-mile Ft. Lauderdale (G2) and 1 1/16-mile Transylvania (G3), losing the latter race by only a nose.
Kentucky Derby fans are surely familiar with Sense to Compete’s sire, Street Sense. The U.S. champion two-year-old male of 2006 won the 2007 Kentucky Derby and has since enjoyed a successful stud career.
If Jas fails to win the Kentucky Derby, a lack of stamina is unlikely to be the reason. He’s bred to run 1 1/2 miles and possibly longer, so Jas could target any number of major route races on both dirt and turf in 2027 and beyond.
