Kentucky Derby pedigree profile: Ocelli

A rallying third-place finish in the 1 1/8-mile Wood Memorial (G2) launched Ocelli into the 2026 Kentucky Derby (G1) picture.
Even though Ocelli is winless in six starts, he’s earned 25 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby and could become the fifth maiden since 2016 to compete in the Run for the Roses. Should he prevail on the first Saturday in May, he’ll join Buchanan (1884), Sir Barton (1919), and Brokers Tip (1933) as one of four horses to score their first career win in the Kentucky Derby.
It’s a tall task, but as history shows, not an insurmountable one. Much the same can be said of Ocelli’s ability to handle the Kentucky Derby’s 1 1/4-mile pedigree. His pedigree is arguably geared toward success over 1 1/8 miles or less, but there’s a chance he’s inherited enough stamina to stay the Derby distance.
Ocelli is a son of Connect, a high-class performer over middle distances. He scored his signature win in the one-mile Cigar Mile H. (G1), but also stretched out over 1 1/8 miles to defeat future Horse of the Year Gun Runner in the Pennsylvania Derby (G2).
Connect faltered in his lone try over 1 1/4 miles, finishing a non-threatening sixth in the Travers (G1). But perhaps he had an off day. As a son of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin (a renowned source of classic stamina) out of a mare by Holy Bull (the sire of 2005 Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo), there’s nothing in Connect’s pedigree to suggest he couldn’t have been effective over 1 1/4 miles.
It’s encouraging to note that Connect has proven capable of passing on stamina at stud. His runners win at the respectable average distance of 7.2 furlongs, and a few have shown promising form over classic distances. Rattle N Roll, winner of the 1 1/16-mile Breeders’ Futurity (G1), also stretched out over 1 3/16 miles to take the Pimlico Special (G3). Forever After All stayed 1 1/2 miles to win the Bewitch (G3) and La Prevoyante (G3), and Candy Quest—conqueror of the one-mile Ontario Colleen (G3)—showed enough stamina to run second in the 1 5/16-mile Dueling Grounds Oaks.
It’s worth noting, however, that Forever After All and Candy Quest proved best on turf. Connect has proven less reliable as a source of dirt stamina, which could potentially limit Ocelli’s distance range to 1 1/8 miles or less.
But Connect represents only one half of Ocelli’s pedigree. Does his female family bring more dirt stamina to the table?

Ocelli is the first winning foal produced by Zalia, a daughter of Scat Daddy out of the Empire Maker mare Vivo Per Lei. Zalia raced four times and proved best as a turf sprinter, winning a 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight and finishing second in a pair of six-furlong allowances. Her lone start in a route race produced a 10th-place finish in the 1 1/16-miles Jessamine (G2).
One might assume Zalia’s speed means she’s unlikely to produce a winner over classic distances, but her own pedigree contains stamina, and there’s a chance she’s passed it on to Ocelli.
Scat Daddy, for example, was a capable dirt route racer who won the 1 1/8-mile Florida Derby (G1) and one-mile Champagne (G1). At stud, he sired major winners over an incredibly wide variety of surfaces and distances, but he’s best known for his son Justify, whose triumphs in the Kentucky Derby, 1 3/16-mile Preakness (G1), and 1 1/2-mile Belmont (G1) gave him a sweep of the Triple Crown.

Daughters of Scat Daddy have likewise produced notable winners over an astonishing array of distances and surfaces. Examples include champion male sprinter Whitmore—best known for winning the six-furlong Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) on dirt—and Burnham Square, winner of the 1 1/8-mile Blue Grass (G1) on dirt and the 1 1/2-mile Elkhorn (G2) on turf.
As for Vivo Per Lei, she performed best as a grass miler, placing third in the one-mile Goldikova (G2) and 1 1/16-mile Yellow Ribbon H. (G2). But her sire, Empire Maker, was a star over classic distances on dirt, winning the Belmont and finishing second in the Kentucky Derby. Male-line descendants of Empire Maker include 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah and 2017 Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming.
The dirt prowess of Empire Maker came through in Vivo Per Lei’s most accomplished foal, Pipeline, runner-up in the 1 1/8-mile Monmouth Cup (G3) and third in the seven-furlong Forego (G1).
Overall, the balance of evidence suggests Ocelli is more likely to appreciate distances of 1 1/8 miles or less. But if the stoutest genetics of Curlin, Empire Maker, and even Scat Daddy shine through, the Kentucky Derby’s 1 1/4-mile journey may be within reach.
