Kentucky Derby Roundup: Commandment, Renegade score big wins

March 31st, 2026

The 2026 Kentucky Derby (G1) is 32 days away. Catch up on the latest news and notes as the Road to the Kentucky Derby unfolds:

Commandment edges The Puma in thrilling Florida Derby

Fountain of Youth (G2) winner Commandment vaulted to the top of the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard when he battled to a tenacious triumph in the 1 1/8-mile Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park.

The son of Into Mischief finished fast from behind slow pace fractions of :24.10, :48.80, and 1:13.00 to defeat Tampa Bay Derby (G3) winner The Puma by a nose in 1:49.99. Chief Wallabee finished another half-length back in third place, followed by Nearly, Wayne’s Law, and Timeless Victory.

The Florida Derby awarded 100-50-25-15-10 points to the top five finishers. Commandment has accumulated 150 points in total, locking up a spot in the Kentucky Derby starting gate. The Puma sits fourth with 106 points, and Chief Wallabee has advanced to 12th place with 50 points.

Renegade romps in Arkansas Derby

Fresh off a win in the Sam F. Davis S., Renegade brought his 2026 tally to 2-for-2 with an eye-catching triumph in the 1 1/8-mile Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn Park, a Kentucky Derby qualifier worth 100-50-25-15-10 points.

Renegade rated as far back as eighth place behind splits of :23.25, :47.80, and 1:12.52 before unleashing a powerful rally to draw clear and dominate by four lengths in 1:49.70. He now ranks second on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with 125 points.

Silent Tactic closed for second place, his fourth straight top-two finish on the Kentucky Derby trail. He’s accumulated 100 points, ranking fifth on the leaderboard.

Taptastic, Blackout Time, and Bricklin rounded out the Arkansas Derby top five.

Wonder Dean, Six Speed qualify via UAE Derby

Wonder Dean and Six Speed will take aim at the Kentucky Derby after finishing 1-2 in the UAE Derby (G2) at Meydan in Dubai, the final leg of the European/Middle East Road to the Kentucky Derby.

Coming off a fourth-place finish in the Saudi Derby (G3), Wonder Dean relished stretching out over 1,900 meters (about 1 3/16 miles) in the UAE Derby. He unleashed a sustained challenge down the homestretch to reel in pacesetting Six Speed and prevail by 2 1/2 lengths in 1:59.19, earning the lion’s share of the 100-60-30-15-10 points up for grabs.

Pyromancer, Brotherly Love, and Devon Island completed the top five.

Wonder Dean and Six Speed have respectively earned 106 and 80 points on the European/Middle East Road to the Kentucky Derby, placing them 1-2 atop the leaderboard. They’ve secured the two Kentucky Derby berths awarded to the top points earners in the series, and the connections of both Wonder Dean and Six Speed have confirmed they’ll compete on the first Saturday in May.

Danon Bourbon stamps Derby ticket in Fukuryu

Danon Bourbon brought his record to 3-for-3 and secured his spot in the Kentucky Derby starting gate with a win in the Fukuryu S. racing 1,800 meters (about 1 1/8 miles) at Nakayama in Japan.

The final leg of the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby awarded points on a 40-20-12-8-4 basis. After tracking the pace in third place, Danon Bourbon finished fastest of any horse in the field to beat pacesetter Don Erectus by 3 1/2 lengths in 1:50.9, a stakes record.

Charlie, Itterasshai, and Sunrise Kevin rounded out the top five.

When the dust settled, Don Erectus ranked atop the Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard thanks to points and earnings accumulated in earlier legs of the series, but his connections declined the invitation to compete at Churchill Downs. Thus, second-ranked Danon Bourbon claimed the one starting berth up for grabs.

Seven horses vie for Santa Anita Derby supremacy

American Pharoah (G1) winner Intrepido, San Felipe (G2) 1-2 finishers Potente and Robusta, and runaway maiden winner Cherokee Nation lead a seven-horse field entered in Saturday’s Santa Anita Derby (G1) at Santa Anita, a Road to the Kentucky Derby qualifier worth 100-50-25-15-10 points.

San Vicente (G2) winner So Happy, California Chrome Cal Cup Derby winner Start the Ride, and maiden winner Vitruvian Man complete the competitive lineup.

Further Ado returns to Kentucky for Blue Grass

Further Ado, winner of the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) last fall, is returning to Kentucky for Saturday’s Blue Grass (G1) at Keeneland.

Further Ado kicked off 2026 with a runner-up finish in the Tampa Bay Derby (G3). In his second start of the season, he’ll face Champagne (G1) runner-up Talkin, Rebel (G2) winner Class President, John Battaglia Memorial S. conqueror Great White, flashy allowance winner Reagan’s Honor, Louisiana Stallion of the Year Star Guitar S. victor Creole Chrome, Virginia Derby sixth-place finisher Ocelli, the maiden Moonstrocity, and Withers S. third-place finisher Ottinho.

The Blue Grass is worth 100-50-25-15-10 points to the top five finishers.

Napoleon Solo seeks a rebound in Wood Memorial

Napoleon Solo was tons the best in the Champagne at Aqueduct last fall, setting a blazing pace before pulling clear to win by 6 1/2 lengths. He disappointed in his 2026 debut, finishing fifth in the Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream, but perhaps returning to Aqueduct for Saturday’s Wood Memorial (G2) will trigger a rebound.

Worth 100-50-25-15-10 points, the Wood Memorial has drawn a large and competitive field. Gotham (G3) 1-3 finishers Iron Honor and Right to Party, Withers S. hero Talk to Me Jimmy, Holy Bull (G3) runner-up Bravaro, Southwest (G3) third-place runner Buetane, and Remsen (G2) fourth-place finisher Courting are among the other Road to the Kentucky Derby alumni in the lineup.

Ocelli and Ottinho are cross-entered in both the Wood Memorial and the Blue Grass. Per David Grening of the Daily Racing Form, Ottinjo will compete in the Blue Grass.

Maiden winners Steel and Albus, Funny Cide S. winner Minorinconvenience, and runaway City of Brotherly Love S. conqueror Red Zone Runner round out the Wood Memorial field.

Paladin off the Derby trail with ankle injury

According to the Daily Racing Form, Paladin—the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby after taking the Remsen (G2) and Risen Star (G2)—will miss the Run for the Roses after exiting a March 28 workout with a condylar fracture in his right front ankle.

Canaletto, the third-place finisher from the Tampa Bay Derby, is likewise off the Derby trail with an injury.

Renegade leads Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 6

With Paladin out of the picture, Renegade is the 4-1 morning-line favorite in Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 6, which opens on Thursday at noon ET.

Commandment (6-1), The Puma (8-1), and Chief Wallabee (10-1) are other high-profile horses expected to attract significant wagering support.

Pool 6 closes on Saturday at approximately 6:00 p.m. ET, prior to the running of the Santa Anita Derby, Blue Grass, and Wood Memorial.

Sovereign Law breaks maiden at Gulfstream

Sovereign Law might be making progress too late to join the Kentucky Derby field, but the Juddmonte homebred scored a notable maiden victory on Florida Derby Day at Gulfstream Park.

The son of Into Mischief charged from midfield to win a one-mile maiden special weight in 1:38.35. The Brad Cox trainee improved significantly from his sixth-place debut sprinting at Gulfstream and may have a bright future.
