Ted Noffey 6-1, All Others 7-2 in KDFW Pool 3

Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW) concluded Sunday evening where it started, with undefeated Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) star Ted Noffey holding as the individual favorite at his morning-line price of 6-1.
The mutuel field of “All Others” retained overall favoritism at 7-2, trimmed from a 4-1 morning line. That was a shade higher than the 2-1 at the close of Pool 2, which ran from Nov. 27-30.
Certain to be named champion two-year-old male at Thursday night’s Eclipse Awards, Ted Noffey was the 7-1 individual choice in Pool 2. The Todd Pletcher pupil just returned to the Palm Beach Downs worktab Jan. 16, the opening day of Pool 3, and breezed three furlongs in a bullet :37.01. Plans call for Ted Noffey to kick off his campaign in the Feb. 28 Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream Park.
Although the top of the market was fairly steady, Pool 3 witnessed a sea change in the next tier of contenders. Paladin, who captured the Dec. 6 Remsen (G2) at Aqueduct, emerged as the second individual choice at 14-1. The Chad Brown trainee had been a 22-1 chance in Pool 2.
But bettors were especially taken by a trio of KDFW newcomers, all recent Gulfstream winners who have yet to face stakes company. Bill Mott’s seven-furlong debutant Chief Wallabee plunged from a 60-1 morning line into 17-1, and stablemate Thunderously, who romped at 1 1/16 miles at first asking, was bet down from 60-1 to 22-1. They bookended Pletcher’s seven-furlong allowance winner Nearly, a 50-1 shot at the opening of trade but hammered into 20-1 at the end.
Another Pletcher sophomore in action at Gulfstream, Mucho Macho Man S. hero Commandment, finished at 23-1. He had been 69-1 in Pool 2. Also closing at 23-1 was the Bob Baffert-trained Brant, the Del Mar Futurity (G1) winner and third-placer in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
The most noteworthy drifter was Further Ado, who floated from 10-1 up to 26-1. He had been half that price (13-1) in Pool 2, the window of his Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) victory at Churchill Downs.
Further Ado’s stablemate from the Brad Cox barn, Cannoneer, shaded him at 24-1. Pool 3 marked his KDFW debut, in the aftermath of his smashing maiden win on the Kentucky Jockey Club undercard – the “Stars of Tomorrow II” program.
